Guests: Pablo Mayor + Anna Povich de Mayor of Folklore Urbano / Chonta Records + Robert Kelley of Chonta Records

A preview of the annual NYC Colombian music scene marathon showcase, the Colombian Music Encounter. This year's event happens Saturday December 1 at the Zipper Theater, 336 W. 37th St 4pm-1am.

Pianist Pablo Mayor and his flautist wife Anna lead the roots-tinged jazz ensemble Folklore Urbano - one of the seventeen (!) groups on the 2007 Encounter lineup. They are the organizers of the Encounter along with partner Robert Kelley, with whom they run Chonta Records, a locally based label dedicated to putting out cds by Colombian artists now based in New York.

We hear music by many of the artists playing the Zipper Theatre event on the 1st, and learn about the ever-growing NYC Colombian scene.

The full tentative schedule for the December 1 Colombian Music Encounter at the Zipper Theater is on the Transpacific Sound Paradise World Music Events page, http://www.wfmu.org/world.

Listener comments!

  6:35pm julian:

G'morning Rob!
I'm feeling warmer already - cheers!
The Alim Qasimov track is superb.
  6:58pm Ana Serene:

I lived in NYC for a long time and loved listening to your show. Now that I have been in rural MA for the past 5 years, I feel very lucky to be able to still have access to your show through this site. THANKS!!!
  8:09pm archmo:

this music is *driven*...makes me wanna shuffle a deck of cards in midair!!!
  8:19pm Rob W:

Well Archmo, would you be in midair or would the cards be - ? Just, you know, act responsibly... But yes, there's some great high-energy music coming out of the Colombian scene in New York. Glad you like it. And thanks Julian and Ana for your comments too.
  8:51pm Tonee:

Sawasdii from Thailand , I love your station , I live in Chiang Mai and found you through a reference made on the Neil rogers show on WQAM radio in Miami, Chok dii , Tonee
  10:33pm Ike:

Hey cool, a listener in Chiang Mai. I was visiting Chiang Mai several weeks ago and I listened to FMU online from some net cafes there. That AAC+ stream was great, at least when a cafe had Winamp instead of just the pathetic Windows Media Player. AAC+ offers good fidelity without needing much bandwidth.
