I was a huge Keith Emerson fan. Had all the Nice albums and loved the recent released 1st ELP album. I was a young record store clerk.
In spring of 1971 a group of us piled into a 10+ year old sedan and drove from Dallas TX to Houston TX (about 250 miles) to see ELP. At that time the speed limit on the highway was 70 MPH. Most of the time the driver was going 90+ MPH so we got to the venue in under three hours.
We did not expect it to be sold out. There were 5 of us. We pleaded. We drove all the way from Dallas. They would not let us in.
Somehow, perhaps at the suggestion of the security at the front entrance, we found our way to the stage door at the back of the auditorium. We could faintly hear the opening band through the doors. The security guards were friendly but firm about not letting us in. When someone came in or out, while the door was open, we could hear pretty clearly. Doors closed, the music was a muffled rumble.
The opening band finished and after a wait ELP started. Several times the doors were opened as people were let in or out, and we could hear the music well for a few seconds. A limo pulled up. A few minutes later the opening band came out. Somehow us being gathered around the door was conflated into adulation of the opening band. Someone, perhaps one of the security guards produced a spiral notebook, the band signed it, the page from the notebook torn out and given to us. They left.
I wasn't aware of who the opening band was. Turned out it was Humble Pie, which still included Peter Frampton. After Humble Pie departed the foot traffic in and out of the back door ended and the security guards stayed inside. After about 15 or 20 minutes of no activity except the muffled distant sounding rumble of the band, we decided to start the drive back to Dallas, rather than wait we didn't know how long for ELP to finish and come out.
Don't know what happened to the Humble Pie / Marriott / Frampton / Shirley / Ridley signed notebook page. For a while it was tacked to the wall in the small house that a fellow record store clerk and I shared. I moved out and lost contact. Never did see Emerson in person.

I also didn't see Pink Fairies in '71 because there was a 18+ door policy, so we hung around the front smoking cigarettes. The band were so loud we may not have seen them but we sure heard them.

I saw another opening band pull that crap, but it was Pere Ubu, and David Thomas excoriated them in several rants.
I'm often enjoyed opening sets more than the main act, but pulling rank because of friends to play a loooong set isn't right (also, don't try that with David Thomas)

"Into the trees" is his golfing anthem (he also headbutted one running after a ball)
