We're visiting the Outer Banks in North Carolina, and Zipperdawg is really upset. He said that "marking" the Cape Hatteras lighthouse was on his bucket list, but when we went there yesterday it was closed for repair. He also told me that other “bucket” items were herding livestock in the Scottish highlands and humping Donald Trump’s leg. I wished him good luck on both of those.

I'm fairly sure that the Congo being referenced in the tunes in this set are not any attempt at incorporating African tradition into their music. Instead they are using Congo as an euphemism for the dark side of town. Back of the tracks. Etc.

And now you play Prince Lasha and Ike Quebec which are right after Congo independence and then the assassination of Patrice Lumumba which was in the news and on people's minds.

WR, you are not wrong that "Congo" here is a symbolic indicator of some vague sense of "Africa" and/or the so-called "dark continent," or as you reference, some shadowy, sinister place. But with those selections, I was really going for a sound that was more wholesomely attempting to project a loving sense of homage to that far-off exotic space. The intentions were not so much exploitative as it might otherwise have been (as has occurred in so many instances in popular culture).

WR, there is a long, sordid history of Black American jazz musicians being used as geopolitical tools. There were numerous tours of the so-called unaligned nations in the '50s and '60s sponsored by the State Department. An effort to project to the world (and to newly liberated nations of peoples of color) that the USA was a racially harmonious country. This has been written about extensively. It's pretty clear that Louis Armstrong knew the deal explicitly. One time after some racial outrage in the U.S. (I can't remember the particulars at the moment), Armstrong refused to embark on one of those State Department tours until the U.S reversed some policy or somesuch. I imagine this scenario is easily findable online, I just can't remember the specifics.
