Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from December 13, 2024 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

To the point - Demos are more 'Punk'. What Kerouac said about First Thot Best Thot - transferred to this Music & Songwriting thing. That is - obvsly it's more spontaneous - which means more expressive, fresh - honest... & frankly less Commercial, pandering - &tc. ... The rough Edges are what we are in it for, matter of fact...
Otoh - the final Production is the complete fleshed-out thing the Artist signs off on for General Release ...& our consumption. Demos are generally Recorded crudely with lowfi...

Well it's gonna Depend a lot. I think TheBeatles & GeorgeMartin for example were a total Team as Creators. I love hearing every bit of how they got to the final Product. But they got the Creative balance very right down the line... Which I guess is to say that it all puts the interrogation lamp on what this thing is with Production overall...

Greatly enjoying what I'm hearing today.

Hearing you comment regarding what you like about demo's made me think a bit about why I am enjoying these so much. One thing is that many of them sound like how I have most enjoyed music, listening in person in rehearsal as a musician or friend of the band. Better sound than most any live venue. More comfortable than most any live venue. Hearing the music the people are making not what the team thought a finished product for radio or commerce should sound like at any particular time and place.

Well - the consensus would be Pete is pretty significant indeed. Just in developing larger amplifiers ...& much much more.
But obvsly he's jealous of Zep succeeding hugely in a format hugely influenced by TheWho. & I think intends to be transparent about all aspects of that...
As for shining examples of humanity - sadly, out believed Art & Culture of Rawk may not be the most fertile incubator...
Myself - TheWho crashed into the center of my heart spontaneously. Zep I always liked but never fell in love with the same way. Something less original ...even see Page as an usurper of Beck in the yARdbiRdS. But - play them. I'll probly enjoy it...

Page is a very able and adaptable guitar player. He's not on every second record in London in the 60s for nothing. I do think that he practised less than the other two Yardbirds guitarists when he was with Led Zeppelin. Between big American tours and intense bursts of create writing and playing in the studio. And sex. And drugs. And magick. And more drugs.

There are times that Page played guitar where he seemed spaced out. I've heard at least 3 versions of "Stairway To Heaven" where he botched the solo; 1983 ARMS concert, Live Aid and the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary show.

I'm not saying he's not significant. And I don't know as much about the Who's music and their historical significance but I think Led Zeppelin's creativity and quality of music, and originality, were all really strong and of high quality. The song's I've heard, on the radio, by the Who, are not as great, to me, and have not carried that much weight over time. I think Jimmy Page's work speaks for itself. And if Townesend is criticizing them morally, he should look in the mirror.

You said about Pete - 'nor do I think, personally, that he is up there as one of greats in terms of musicmakesrs'. As a matter of taste - that is fine. As far as the consensus of the Culture of Rawk - I posit this is simply false.
& TheWho have had massive success in the Charts - before & during Zep's existence - & if you're unfamiliar with TheWho's body of work beyond Commercial Radio (is what you imply) - then I posit this is no measure of their relevance (& would be true also os Zep ...tho I myself am aware enuff of their entire oeuvre as well...)
TheWho were very broadly exalted as contender for Best Live Band ever - & so on. As for Townshend critiquing Zep on moral grounds ...I'm not familiar with this.

I did say that. What I mean is I'm sure he is significant but I don't think he is as talented as Jimmy Page. And I don't think the Who is as talented as Led Zeppelin. I'm not saying they didn't make geeat music. To me they are at different levels of greatness. That's just my opinion based on what I have heard.

About two weeks ago, this guy came into the record store. He said he was a DJ at a bar downtown. A young guy who works at the shop comes over to us holding the first album by Boston super exited. DJ guy puts him down for even holding he record. I felt so embarrassed and sorry I asked him to try out for a spot the decks.

You could make the case Townshend is not as versatile a Gittarist as Page. I would posit Townshend had more impact on Gittar generally by far - including Page - by pioneering larger amplifiers & the arsenal of Hard Rawk itself. As for Talent broadly - Pete is more of a Composer, MultiInstrumentalist & Conceptulist - by incomparable measures. Plant wrote some good lines... Moon, Entwistle & Daltrey likewise were all pioneers in their position for Hard Rawk - & are broadly recognized as especially Great, Innovative - even incomparable Musicians (esp. Moon & Entwistle revolutionizing what their Instruments even mean in Rawk).
John Paul Jones like Page was a great Session player. He has Arranging abilities & things... Plant a remarkable Vocalists - especially early when his chords were young... Bonham is very widely regarded as Great indeed - with Power, Funk & Tone all in his corner. Not especially innovative or versatile to my reckoning... Page did have his own style - but - like Zep generally - is widely regarded as a magpie - even a thief - as far as emulating other Players (Bert Jansch, whomever)...

The Who, The Kinks, The Beatles were the big three that blew up British music, while the Stones and Led Zeppelin remained in the blues idiom, Jimi already there, anything Eric:blues. So there's a disparity in the imputed greater-ness of either band. Depending on which digression was taken, these band did radically different things from each other, better, because they were each in different idioms...going in different directions, aspiring to be great in some other ways(s)

Well yeah. Zep was big, dumb & sexy in the 1970s good time way a lot of people love. Good for them. To be fair - Zep had more International Music influences & Folk nuance than they get cred for... & with Sabbath are the direct templates for Metal, undeniably.
TheWho relate to PowerPop (which insignificant Townshend named) - PUNK - & Alternative in other ways - & in their relation to Culture & the Audience. While also pioneering RawkOpera & Rawk as Theatre... & Synths ...& yes is relevant as Writer in how Rawk relates to Spirituality & Politically - in ways Zep never even attempted.
A similar as they are otherwise...

Ah yes, of course, but that was later i the decade, not much by today's standards, but a couple of years in the mid-60s seemed like 15. The Yardbirds embodied that rip in the fabric of everything...the blues burned away, and the green faerie magic welled up. And set off a second British wave, of psychedelia that time
