Tracking ability is key, as 45s can be cut loud. The least expensive option is the Audio Technica AT85EP, for only $40. It's a P-Mount, so an adapter is needed for standard mount tonearms. Tracking ability is demonstrated in a video I made. Search for "audio technica AT85EP tracking" on YouTube.

The example I like to use is for how AM and FM really pleayed much of same stuff still in 73, but there was a line that was VERY thin between what was acceptable to play on "kiddie" AM and adult FM, which was not really fair to artists.
Play AM Osmonds' 73 "Goin Home" and then FM Edgar Winter Group's "Rivers Risin." BOTH 73/4 releases, yet basically the SAME song sound.
