it's just that there is soooooo much to deal with, on so many different levels. clean up and processing all the debris is a huge challenge. lots of basic infrastructure to rebuild. parts of town are still closed to traffic, businesses are still closed, many people in the area simply don't have a house to return to. it's a huge, huge disaster in the region.

I didn’t get a chance to mention this last week, so here I go. Like a lot of us, I “discovered” Nick Drake after he died. Much like Eva Cassidy, it was a Village Voice article written after his passing that turned me on. It must’ve been a year or two after his death, and I immediately ran out and bought both Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter. I was blown away!
Anybody else see the tribute to Nick at St Ann’s in Brooklyn? Hal Willner co-produced it as he did with the Sandy Denny tribute. They were both amazing nights with incredible musicians and singers. But, I would’ve gladly traded both those experiences to have seen Nick and Sandy while they were still with us.

Mornin', BOB! See you played a tune by the DOORS. Is it just a myth that there is a widespread antipathy toward the band that permeates the staff and listenership of WFMU? I have on occasion heard it expressed. Would like to hear from you and any listeners who can shed some light on this issue.

Entitled Labyrinth - British Jazz On Record 1960-75 and written by Richard Morten Jack the book is a 375 page, large-format, premium quality hardback that focuses on all the key albums on both major and independent labels of this pivotal time when boundary-breaking and experimentation first broke through in UK jazz. First heard this material on that cream-coloured 'non-album' that was made out of the first two records [still have it] back in the winter of '77, when I was alone in a different city not my own yet, bereft of money and friends, and even hope sometimes. I got it in trade for some records I had. It was one of those listening moments when you look at those other records in the pile and they don't even seem to mean anything anymore. It's powerful stuff, Nick Drake.

That ad really did wonders. Plus I actually liked the commercial itself.

A question: When I heard Nick Drake later on, I could have sworn I'd heard a song or two back in the day and thought it was (an exceptionally serious) Donovan song. Did Nick Drake get any airplay on the more esoteric college and alternative stations in the US back then?

And who was the hero of that story? who had the idea to use the song? anyone know? I'm sure it's out there

I think you would need to look up the advertising agency that produced the commercial.

“Northern Sky” is what directed my attention to Nick in 1977. It was the first track on a 99¢ record called “The Greater Antilles Sampler” which also featured June Tabor, Fripp & Eno, and John Cage among others. Cheap sampler albums were such a good thing.
Thanks for that hour, Bob!

Roach was a star already, Clifford Brown a young, up and coming player, imagine how much Roach must have thought of him to have him co-lead a working band with him!
