He had a lucky break with "A Girl Like You" (not the Smithereens song) Then he had an unlucky break where he suffered a brain haemorrhage and basically had to relearn everything to play music again. It's really an amazing story.

	6:06pm northguineahills: the reason why so much underground kiwi rock sounds like the velvets is b/c until recently, there used to be a tariff on all vinyl pressed outside of NZ, and getting a tariff license was only large stores could afford. however, cheap discount versions of the velvets s/t and white light/white heat was issued in NZ in the mid 70s in large numbers (comparatively)
