There was a moment when these guys were like gods. Then they played a bad show in town and people were like Next! Might have had a bit to do with the promoters charging an extortionate ticket price. I did not attend but it went down in infamy.

Also a quick reminder that GenX was the ONLY generation born that paradoxically had 2 things going for/against it: 1) We were born during a time of expanding freedoms and social justice for women and minorities but now 2) we're the LAST generation to have even had a shot at stuff like pensions, home ownership, etc. It only takes one generation of indoctrination/the stupids to turn a country into a shithole. The second Regan hit, his only goal was to sloooooowly poison the judicial system/gerrymandering/etc/ all in an effort to roll back any progress we had made as a society.

I would hate to leave NYC. This is my home. I'm from here. BUT my bro is a citizen in Australia and can sponsor me as a family unification visa request. AND I have an EU passport. The only reason why my ass isn't on a plane to Berlin already is that the dirty little secret for most NATO countries is that they rely on Russian oil. Too bad Scotland ain't part of the EU; they have their own North Sea supplies.

Probably not allowed to work my current job from overseas but then again I ain't that far away from minimum retirement/Social Security collection. Unless major changes happen, I can't see myself growing old here. Pricing apartments in Berlin and Helsinki. Not ready to pull the trigger yet but want to get my ducks in a row.

Since you are a youngun, all I can say as a GenXer who was one of the first 100,000 people on the Internet: Take your social tools BACK. Micro-organize. Get to know your neighbors, your block, your local support systems, and so on. As a GenXer I know that my generation ironically was the first born into a USA with better civil rights/womens rights than the prior generation, but ironically we're the LAST generation that had ANY shot at a pension, reasonable retirement, etc etc etch. In any event unless major changes happen for the better very very soon I am sure as fuck not retiring here. I figure between today and then, Putin will pull his shot and we'll know what's up with EU countries and NATO. I'm also checking out prices of apartments in Melbourne. I can actually get a nice 1.5 BR right near my bro's place for something like $300K-$500K US money. My other cousins in the US, save one who is in NYC about half of the year, are scattered. My bro and his kids are the only family I really have left that I talk to on the regular AND the kids are beneficiaries in my will. If I am allowed to do my current job abroad I may just go sooner rather than later.

Part of the problem, to paraphrase Cory Doctorow, is the "casserole or shotgun" paradox. When someone you don't know moves in next door, do you show up with a casserole or pick up a shotgun and stake them out before making contact? Too many people in America are in the "shotgun" category. The rest are just willfully STUPID. As in a guy who I've known for some time -- a regular at the bar at both my old AND my new place in Astoria (2 different bars) was going on "women know they're pregnant at 5 weeks; they start to show then" and "you know why NVIDIA is getting so rich? They make all the microchips in all of the phones that the US Government is buying for illegal immigrants." Both sentences came out of his mouth in less than 3 minutes. This is a guy in a Union job with health issues. He's MUCH more fucked than I ever will be in all likelihood. Citizens United and the death of the media Fairness Doctrine under Regan set the whole ball of stupid spinning.

this is true but it's also really tough. I live in rural Texas, it's demoralizing to be an educated person out here. I try really hard not to act smart or say I went to the schoolhouse (college). It's safest to stay at surface level "hi how are you" with most people. But that's definitely better than nothing.
