The Wozard of Iz - An Electronic Odessey

A & M

1968

Here he takes the Wizard of Oz, gives it a totally psychedelic synth make over, and gives it a counterculture theme, which is hardly subtle, and the veiled references to real life places and people weren't really all that veiled, it was so obvious to anyone who knew about the 1960s. Canvas City was Kansas City (thought of as a generic Midwestern city), Lemon County was Orange County, California (a conservative bastion that the counterculture avoided, it's largely suburban), Robert Squelch (Robert Welch, the founder of the John Birch Society), the Upset Strip (the Sunset Strip, which was famous for a youth riot in 1966 that inspired Stephen Stills to write "For What It's Worth" for Buffalo Springfield), the only place not veiled was Big Sur. So you get Dorothy, and several characters that are conformist, unable to think for themselves, materialistic, and status quo-obsessed with The In-Man, the Lyin' Coward, and the Scared-Crow....

Hugh Cornwell & Robert Williams  Nosferatu   Favoriting Nosferatu  EMI  1979  Nosferatu is an album by Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers and Robert Williams, drummer in Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. Guest musicians on the album include keyboardist Ian Underwood from Frank Zappa's band and guitarist David Walldroop. Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh of the band Devo play on the song "Rhythmic Itch", and "Wrong Way Round" features Ian Dury as a fairground barker (listed as "Duncan Poundcake" on the album credits) "As far as the motivation to make the record goes, Nosferatu was pure whimsy," Cornwell said in 2014. "I mean [Stranglers bassist Jean-Jacques] Burnel had just recorded Euroman, so I thought, why not have a go?"    0:02:54 (Pop-up)

Proximity Crush  Boris the Manskinner   Favoriting Frames  Painbox Records  2022  Dread dread o terrible dread! They are from Albany, NY. "We try to mix a lot of different genres together. My main goal is to have each song on a record feel very distinct, like each track is a portal into a different world. I think we achieve that to a certain degree on our EP but the genre we usually get slapped with is post-punk, which makes sense. We aren’t abrasive enough to fully be noise-rock or shoegaze and not melodic enough to really fit pure indie-rock. My voice isn’t great at carrying pitch either so I mostly go for a post-punky growl/shout. Interpol really influenced me growing up but now I seek to land somewhere between Unwound, Swell Maps, Swirlies and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. That’s a pretty broad palette but mixing the best elements of those bands is the main goal."    0:07:14 (Pop-up)
The Gun Club  A Devil in the Woods   Favoriting Miami  Animal Records  1982  Miami is the second studio album by American rock band the Gun Club, released in 1982. It was released on Animal Records, founded by guitarist Chris Stein of Blondie, who also produced the album. Debbie Harry, also of Blondie, appears as a backing singer on various tracks on the album under the pseudonym "D.H. Laurence Jr." The album front cover photograph does not include bassist Rob Ritter who had already left the band. Before leaving, Ritter first taught all the bass-lines to Patricia Morrison, his replacement in the Gun Club and former bandmate in the Bags.    0:09:53 (Pop-up)
The Endtables  Trick or Treat   Favoriting The Endtables  Drag City  2010  Formed in Louisville in 1978, the Endtables lasted less that two years, releasing just one four-song EP while together. The Endtables compiles that EP, a posthumous two-song single, and six live tracks, painting a quick, sharp portrait of a band that sounded like they were in a hurry. Chugging along at a palpitating clip, the group flies toward the sun of the Buzzcocks and Gang of Four, but something about their hyper energy makes them a little more off-kilter than those groups. Like a sonic game of Jenga, their tunes feel like they could spill into unruly cacophony at the slightest nudge....    0:12:47 (Pop-up)
Units  Cannibals   Favoriting Digital Stimulation  415 Records  1980  SCOTT RYSER: Music is one of the few things in life that gives me hope that we are not a doomed species…and that we can do something together besides hunt like a pack of wolves. My experience of the world, and especially childhood, reminds me of the novel “Lord of the Flies” …people congregating out of fear…always on the verge of slipping into some kind of chaotic mob mentality…people yearning to be part of the groupthink instead of nurturing individuality…and the will to power overcoming the will to help each other. Music has the power to light up dark, lonely and dangerous places…and give a comforting order, feelings and personality to chaos. Playing music made me feel like I could finally communicate…not just with people…but with “life” in general. When I played music, even as a kid in a small town, it was the only way I could escape the predictable, predetermined, assembly line fate of my future. Playing in a band helped me with my social awkwardness…and allowed me to be a part of civilization on my own terms.    0:15:16 (Pop-up)
Eyeball Skeleton  Eyeball Skeleton   Favoriting #1  My Pal God Records  2005  Washington D.C. Eyeball Skeleton is composed of Bill Brown (guitar, percussion, programming) and his sons Charlie Brown (guitar) and J.J. Brown (bass), ages 10 and 8 as of 2005. Brown founded the group after hearing his children attempting to mimic his own music-making in the house. Their name was invented by the children; JJ provided "Eyeball" and Charlie provided "Skeleton".The group writes songs based upon song titles, lyrics, or pictures created by the children, which are then fleshed out musically with the father. Their debut album, #1, was released on My Pal God Records on April 5, 2005. Following the release, the band appeared on Pancake Mountain and toured with The French Kicks and Drums & Tuba    0:18:47 (Pop-up)
Minimal Man  Two Little Skeletons   Favoriting Two Little Skeletons / Tired Death  Monster Music  1983  We will have the knowledgeable expert back announce this one... //// "Mimal Man was an American industrial and experimental rock project, formed in 1979 in San Francisco, California by leader Patrick Miller. //// Background: Minimal Man was formed in San Francisco, California in 1979 by leader Patrick Miller, a visual and sound artist who moved to San Francisco in the late 1970s. The band often changed members, featuring at different times members of bands such as Tuxedomoon, Factrix and others active in the then-thriving San Francisco experimental, post-punk and industrial scenes. //// Minimal Man remained active in San Francisco recording on the Subterranean Records label until the mid-1980s, after which Miller relocated to Europe, often working with compatriots Tuxedomoon who had made a similar move previously. //// The Minimal Man output ceased after the 1980s, and Miller returned to Los Angeles, where he worked as a set dresser."    0:20:26 (Pop-up)

Frankie and the Witch Fingers  i-Candy   Favoriting i-Candy (Single)  Greenway / Reverberation Appreciation Society  2024  Released Oct 2024: "Frankie and the Witch Fingers are back with new music following their raw release of “Bonehead.” The band has now shared their double AA-side single, “i-Candy,” which premiered on KEXP. //// Building on the energy of their recent album Data Doom, this new track fuses a synth-heavy groove with relentless riffs, telling the story of a female sex robot seeking revenge. The band explains, “i-Candy isn’t programmed for any man’s needs; she’s out to clean up the streets and settle scores in blood.” It’s a dystopian punk anthem with tight, futuristic sounds that carry a fierce narrative. //// “i-Candy” and “Bonehead” are just the beginning of their new musical offerings. Fans can expect more surprises as the band gears up for their headline tour and festival appearances this fall, including Dazed & Confused on October 12th, which replaces the canceled Desert Daze festival." https://frankieandthewitchfingers.bandcamp.com/track/i-candy  *   0:44:00 (Pop-up)
Goat  Zombie   Favoriting Goat  Rocket Recordings  2024  Released Oct 11, 2024. Goat are from Norrbotten County, Sweden & are "Formidable psychic warriors, channelers of the mystic and proponents of a spiritual quest that transcends this realm" ////////// "Whilst this particular mercurial incarnation summons the party dimensions from which we were first introduced to this band well over a decade ago, it also possesses no shortage of curveballs and curiosity. ‘One More Death’ and ‘Goatbrain’ are spectacular curtain-raisers, embodying a hedonistic spirit driven by incisive funk and possessed by merciless fuzz/wah-drenched guitar. Yet if these and the filthy, swaggering groove of ‘Dollar Bill’ mark familiar territory for Goat devotees of old, ‘Fools Journey’ is just the first of several journeys into the beyond - a blissful drifting meditation infused with free jazz and shamanic overtones which bears the hallmarks of their concurrent project Djinn. //// True to the notion of this band effortlessly straddling past, present and future, ‘Frisco Beaver’ - another irresistible party-starter powered by insistent guitar filigree and percussion-driven trance-states - is a literal sequel to ‘Disco Fever’ from 2012’s World Music. Yet elsewhere Goat can happily look towards new horizons and come back with some of the most righteous vibrations they’ve yet delivered. The band’s love of hip hop is the fuel for both the rollicking ceremonial throwdown ‘Zombie’ and the end-credits-epic album closer ‘Ouroboros’ which marries infectious chant to breathless Lalo Schifrin-style breakbeat action. And which also means ultimately, like the titular oldest allegorical symbol in alchemy, we’re right back where we started. //// As Brad Dourif’s character Hazel Moates intones in the 1979 movie Wiseblood “Where you come from is gone; where you thought you were going weren’t never there. And where you are ain’t no good unless you can get away from it”; in Goat’s eternal now of renewal and revelation, there’s never been a more potent means of escape.:  *   0:47:31 (Pop-up)
Chandra  Subways   Favoriting Transportation EP's  Telephone Explosion  1980 / 2018  This track also features Chandra on "Organ [Dissonant]" ------ "Chandra Oppenheim was a child star like no other. As the daughter of famed conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim. By age nine, Chandra was staying up late at her parents’ art-world parties, collaborating in her father’s projects, and performing her own plays at downtown hotspots such as The Kitchen and Franklin Furnace.//// This set the stage for Chandra’s course-altering collaboration with members of The Dance, who were looking to form yet another project and found their muse/fuse in 10-year-old Chandra. Transportation EP, originally released in 1980 by The Dance’s own label, ON/GoGo. Balancing on razor- wire guitars, liquid bass lines, and dub-style melodica, the Chandra band unveiled their first four songs: “Opposite”, “Concentration”, “Subways”, and “Kate.” //// At age 12, the post-punk pre-teen took the stage with her band for the first time at New York’s legendary Mudd Club. A whirlwind of press coverage ensued from glossy magazines like Vogue and Paris Match to the influential underground zine Non LP B Side and a Soho News cover story. //// The infectious, propulsive “Get It Out Of Your System” opens Chandra’s second EP with one of her most commanding performances. “Stranger” slows the pace with stop-start rhythms, woozy synths, and the harmonized return of the melodica, while its lyrics find her being followed by a mysterious character revealed to be a woman. “Tish Le Dire” sounds like The B-52s in an eerie alternate universe with instructions on speaking up to your parents or authorities to the point of threatening suicide. //// Chandra stepped away from the band at age 14 to focus on her education. Sadly, the second EP was shelved and would not see the light of day for decades. //// Chandra’s trip continues with this new deluxe reissue from Telephone Explosion Records. Returning her debut EP to its original four- song, single-record release at a dancefloor-ready remastered 45 RPM, the expanded edition also adds to the second EP with a pair of never released songs from her 1983 four-track cassette demos. “Day Without Success” and “They’re All Alike” find Chandra’s dreamlike vocals driven by minimal wave synth zaps and pulsating drum machines." https://chandrachandra.bandcamp.com/    0:53:00 (Pop-up)
Exotic Pets (Feat. Lora Logic)  Chuddle Dollops   Favoriting Paradise For The Witches  Die Das Der  2024  From Louder Than War / Oct 24: "New Band Of The Day : Exotic Pets : ‘ brilliant pop/noise art punk with added Lora Logic!’ //// New Band Of The Day : Exotic Pets //// Loving this great slice of pop/noise no wave from Birmingham’s Exotic Pets. //// The track drives along on a stub toed bass riff and cranks the excitement towards its climax with some serious shrapnel guitar. The band’s quirky art punk is made to dance to and their skronk groove is cranked with the addition of some wonderful sax playing from the legendary Lora Logic. //// Birmingham’s own rag-tag art punkers, Exotic Pets release their debut EP, ‘Paradise for the Witches’ featuring a special appearance by Lora Logic (Essential Logic / X-Ray Spex) on sax. //// Pets are a four-piece with a predilection for lyrical surrealism and brash instrumentation. The songs on the EP explore themes of conspiracy, outsiderism, hypocrisy and hallucination framed with urgent, simplistic melodies and unhinged rhythm. //// While the band aren’t easily boxed off into a specific genre, there are notes of no wave, punk and psych to their sound. ‘PONK’ is what they call it, whatever that means. Having supported touring acts the likes of Dry Cleaning, The Bug Club, Drahla and FEELS, it’s clear that they have plenty to offer to those crowds. //// Paradise for the Witches was recorded and produced by Stale Winton in his studio in Wolverhampton. //// The EP is officially released on 25th October 2024 when they open for Art Brut (for the second time) at The Castle and Falcon in Birmingham. You can pre-order the digital release on Bandcamp and get the opening track, Chuddle Lollops (feat. Lora Logic) instantly. ///////////Song sheet: Chuddle Dollops, Ghost Hoax, Paradise for the Witches, Pseud, The Place of the Elves. /////////// ——Credits: David Wilkins (vocals and guitar), Adam Williams (guitar), Emily Doyle (bass and backing vocals), Beckett Kelly (drums and backing vocals)——  *   0:55:48 (Pop-up)

Poni Hoax  L.A. Murder Motel   Favoriting Poni Hoax  Tigersushi Records  2006  House Of Jealous Lovers pt. 2 perhaps? Poni Hoax submit another species of French electronic cool, a far cry from today's universally celebrated Daft Punk and Justice. They favor a pewter-dark take on disco to all the neon stagecraft and cut-and-paste primitivism of their fellow countrymen: instead of bright-lights, big-city fare, you'd call this a music of the grubbier districts, of the alleyways and cabarets.    1:23:39 (Pop-up)
Iron Curtain  Terror Story   Favoriting Terror Story/Anorexia 7"  Iron Curtain  1983  At first we are laughing but then we are not. Crispin Glover/Devo-esque delivery makes it that much more special. Iron Curtain was a minimal wave band from Santa Barbara, CA, who played regularly in the Los Angeles underground music scene. They were heavily influenced by The Cure, OMD, Joy Division, and Kraftwerk. So goth. Soooo goth. They also have another song called "Tarantula Scream" that's a black fishnet banger...    1:29:02 (Pop-up)
Lena Platonos  Witches - Magisses   Favoriting Galop  Lyra  1985  Fucking genius at work right here. Produced in the midst of a prolific period in 1985, ‘Gallop’ is both of it's time and beyond it. Although the synth tones and chirruping clicks of an 808 drum machine situate this very much within the ever swelling coldwave canon, there’s something ineffable at play which establishes a contemporary quality, as if Platonos was prematurely stretching the emanations of her synthware to modern predilections. She weaves her voice and words, and creates such a fragile aura of misty notes, that just one wobbled note disrupts and unsettles. This is a brilliant song.    1:32:35 (Pop-up)
Bush Tetras  Things That Go Boom in the Night   Favoriting Things That Go Boom in the Night/Das Ah Riot  Fetish Records  1981  Bush Tetras are an American post-punk No Wave band from New York City, formed in 1979. They are best known for the 1980 song "Too Many Creeps", which exemplified the band's sound of "jagged rhythms, slicing guitars, and sniping vocals. The band drew on the no wave spirit and welded funk, punk, dub and jazz into punchy dancefloor numbers that were as freakish as they were catchy. “It was just a big fuck you to all music that had come before,” says guitarist Pat Place. “It was like: OK, we have no genres or rules, song structure doesn’t exist. It’s a very dadaistic form of music, it’s very nihilistic.”    1:35:28 (Pop-up)
Sneaker Pimps  Small Town Witch   Favoriting Bloodsport  Tommy Boy  2002  One of the reasons this tune is great, is because it samples "Nightclubbing" by Iggy Pop. The Sneaker Pimps are a British trip hop group. They formed in Hartlepool, England in 1994. They are best known for their songs "6 Underground" and "Spin Spin Sugar". STW is off their third album, which was the last studio album before a very long hiatus before returning to the scene for a reunion album in 2021. Excellent Trip Hop Vibes...    1:39:46 (Pop-up)

Im going to a "bands do bands" show tonight, each band, picked a band. There is Against Me, Slint , Black Flag and of course Misfits. The Misfits band is going by "Jerry Only Fans"....no Danzig I guess. Its at a shitty little venue that is like a house show and I'm gonna wear goth seasonal dresss.

That's a fun movie. I saw Smile 2 this week, it was OK, better than the first one, but still kind of feels like a J-Horror cover movie

In a way It Follows was definitely influenced, but was distinctly it's own thing. I always thought the first Smile felt like one of many, many movies that came after Ring's success (and then all got remade themselves after The Ring came out here)

When Kelli was in Brum based band the Lumieres she lived on the same council estate as me.

I'd sometimes see her at the bus stop all dressed up in her leopard print gear & punky/goth make up, carrying her guitar, she'd be about 16 I guess.

The first time this happened the local scrotes who were actually even younger than her gaveher some pretty hard grief & I came close to intervening but she could handle it herself fairly impressively.

Not long after one of the scrotes went down for kicking someone to death, so probably good that I didn't intervene
