This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Doc's good but you can see the segment on youtube i believe - it's worth a look on it's own imo (it's the only part i can remember & i think about it all the time, watch it about once a year)

add to this an ever-increasing interest in conducting with special attention to the rhythm rather than melody - he's doing so much, he's just playing less
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Alex from Media:

So not being a jazz guy (mainly due to disliking the incompleteness of the ideas that are recorded as improvisations) but coming to an appreciation of Miles Davis (here). What I like the most about his music is that it doesn't sound improvised, even when it is. It all comes out as a full composition beginning to end.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
StringOFperils:

↳ Flash Strap @8:08
True. Yeah. The abandonment of melody IS pretty interesting. You start to listen to pulses of sound, and their timbres and....space? Makes me think of a relationship to Monk, or where he seemed to be going. A search for the elements.

samfiman:

Other music can now copy many Reggae patterns, but Dub is a bit more difficult for them because if they copy Dub they would now be playing Reggae. Dub is an art form in itself. Dub is a musical with just little or no vocal at all, sequenced to create a mystical atmosphere with the foundation being the drum and bass and all other instruments and vocals like puffs of cool breeze, which puts this music in a class of its own. Just to mention a few of the people who have established themselves in this specialist area, they are: Scientist, King Tubby’s, Joe Gibbs, Lee (Scratch, Upsetters) Perry, Bunny Lee, Mad Professor, Prince Jammies and myself among others. I am very please to now present to you following Part 1 and 2, here is “In The Mix Part 3” which I hope will give to all mountains of pleasure and entertainment.

i've wondered about something... as artists such as mad professor and Augustus Pablo etc create music from the ground, up (not breaking down and manipulating existing recordings, as is Lee Perry's or Tubby's usual m.o., for example) - it is not technically "dub music" (*by definition*) so - is there an alternate name for it?

well Perry did a lot of dubbing existing recordings but he also recorded tons of original stuff just to dub it - i think there's not so much of a divide there actually. Tubby produced a lot of the stuff he dubbed as well, though with him it's a bit more straightforward

It's still, strictly, dubbing. The Upsettah and his followers were ahead of the curve when it came to multi-tracking in a studio. But strictly speaking, it's just stacking recordings on top of each other, whether they're newly minted or not. At first, the dropped-out or separate tracks were pressed to vinyl slabs, and then rushed out onto the streets by guys operating 'sound systems' outside, so they could 'toast' over top of them...a precusor to hip-hop. But, on their own those dub-plates proved to be both fascinating and infinitely reusable to be combined any way that worked, on the fly. That's my historical take on the term 'dub' anyway. It all became over-dubbing in the lexicon of sound studios.

You can't call me lazy on a seven day a week
Make a million for the Texans, twenty dollar me
Yes, I want a gold ring, riding in a limousine
I'm working so hard, I'm working for the company
I'm working so hard to keep you in the luxury
Now listen, I'm a proud man, not a beggar walking on the street
I'm working so hard, to keep you from the poverty
I'm working so hard to keep you in the luxury, oh yeah
(I'm working so hard, I'm working so hard)
Harder, harder, working, working, working
I think it's such a strange thing, giving me concern
Half the world it got nothing the other half got money to burn
