I love how his guitar tech has high powered fans blowing on the Fender Deluxe onstage.

'At the core of Young’s amplifier setup is a piece of gear as essential to his sound as Old Black: the 1959 tweed Fender Deluxe he’s used since the late Sixties. A small, 15-watt unit, with just two volume knobs and a shared tone control, this amp, says Cragg, “makes all the sound. Onstage, as loud as everything gets, that’s what you hear. And it’s totally stock except for two 6L6’s in place of the original tubes. That boosts the output from 15 to 19 watts, and it kills.” An added consequence of this rebiasing is that the amp runs extremely hot; Cragg has high-powered fans trained on the back of the Deluxe to “keep it from blowing up.”'

I read this thing where he said he learned to shop around for those amps (I think it was those amps) wherever he toured, BUT they had to belong to a specific serial-number range; there was something peculiar to THAT build of the amps that did what he wanted. Only those. He'd purchase them wherever they could be found.

This is true. One Thanksgiving weekend, Chrestis brother came down from NorCal to stay with us. Turkey was not on his mind - he wanted me to drive him out to Lake Elsinore to look at yet another Sedan Delivery, so on Black Friday we headed out to the desert. The Sedan Delivery belonged to a father and son whose house was full of used car parts! Max had twenty thousand dollars in his pocket, and I had to talk him out of squandering it - his wagon was way better.

There is a woman who works at a library near my house. David Crosby had just died, and she told me she use to see him in his cape hanging around in Laurel Canyon. I asked her who else she saw on the street back in the day "Crazy Horse." She said Danny Whitten lived down the block in Echo Park. His mother had a big barn in back of her house and they would practice a lot and entertain the neighbors. But mostly she would hear Danny and his mom yelling at each other.

Speaking of the discounted / cutout price of LANDING ON WATER, it’s important to remember that all those eccentric albums were coming out a time when LPs were over $10 and CDs more like $15 or $20 a pop, so while it was great that Uncle Neil was taking all these artistic risks, a casual / young fan could afford to keep up. In the streaming era it’s much easier (and cheaper) to explore.
