I watched a fascinating documentary on YouTube last week about The Beatles in Hamburg, where they went around to all the places where they played and where they bunked during their times there, and it was great to put a moving image to a lot of those places like The Indra, The Kaiserkeller, the old movie house where they slept, etc. and all the surrounding streets. Very cool.

One of the most interesting parts of that film is how they explained how popular The Beatles really were in Hamburg and how they along with Tony Sheridan and others brought real rock and roll into the region when German pop music at that time was leaning more to the light pop similar to Pat Boone's style. Of all the Beatle books I've read, I never got that sense of how popular they became because they were playing loud in-your-face rock and roll and it was a new experience for the people going to those clubs.

I agree The Beatles had the great X-Factor that can't be planned or plotted out, and that was their timing, They appeared at exactly the right time especially in the US, and they pulled the plug when the time was right. But the Hamburg years have been written about often and until watching this documentary and hearing from people who were there beyond the usual talking heads it gave a sense that the young Beatles were far more influential and popular in Hamburg than has been reported before. It was a great take on the whole Beatles tale.

That's the best way to really dig in and research music, especially the legendary artists from the 60's, to put them into context with what was going on around the music. I do the same with broadcast radio airchecks from the 60's, where you hear what an hour of top-40 radio sounded like in the 60's and also get the news reports and ads, it creates a time machine where the music becomes part of a much bigger picture.

What I never understood was why that Milli Vanilli Grammy wasn't just transferred over to the guys who actually sang on the record. Were they not pretty enough for a Grammy or something?

This reminds me of the argument against getting rid of card catalogs--with digital search you find what you were looking for and that's it. With the context of a card catalog you also find out about things you didn't know to look for.

The music industry overcompensated in their "punishment" after the lid was blown off their dirty little secrets. There was another dance track that was huge at the same time where they had a supermodel pictured as the singer while the real female singer was kept anonymous. I think it was Technotronic featuring Felly. A total marketing sham.

From XTC Song Stories (a fave): "Andy came up with the bell-sounding "collegiate" bass line but it was so fast it would blur if it sounded to bassy," he says. Colin invented the rest of the bass line itself, which is one of the finest and fastest on any XTC track. But if the playing was complex, the song was not. "I was rather embarrassed by its simplicity," says Andy.

It depends on the station and the city, but yes they can be hard to find especially unscoped/unedited broadcasts with complete songs because they would actually chop out the song and just leave the DJ talk and ads to use as demos. A lot of the best ones were either recorded by the DJ's themselves or the stations, and if they leaked out they came from the DJ or their family. The ones recorded off-air by a random listener are usually poor quality but still fascinating.
