In the past, I've tried to connect all of the Weird Circle episodes, by having the same author behind all the stories, or something like that. This year, all of the Weird Circle stories involve Ghosts, in some way or another. Hopefully that isn't a spoiler...

My habit of restoring old radio shows STARTED with my Halloween shows, as a lot of the stories - in particular, "Quiet, Please" - just sound awful. Last year, I embarked on my first restoration efforts, to make last years Halloween shows sound better. In the year since then, my restoration skills have improved, and I have more tools at my disposal. I think the shows this year sound better than before, and I hope they are more enjoyable as a result.

It sort of blows my mind that there were anthology horror radio shows on regular radio in the 40s. I love the idea of people staying up late, past their bedtime, to hear some TERRIFYING story on the radio. It happened to me, as a 10 or 11 year old: my first radio, and I found some radio drama, on late at night. (Probably an episode of Suspense, if I'm not mistaken.) It scared me, and it's been a high I've been chasing my whole life.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Austin Rich:

The Ocean Waves as a transition device on "The Weird Circle" is a nod to the "premise": In a cave, by the edge of the sea, is where you go and hear these tales, told by some nameless narrator. The "premise" is pretty vague; a lot of episodes don't explain this, and the opening only sort of sets up the premise. The Ocean Waves - while interesting - seem like nonsequiters, unless you remember the vague premise of the show.

↳ Song: ""Remains To Be Seen"" by "The Price of Fear"
This is the first episode of The Price of Fear, and is often not re-run when the BBC re-airs this show, around the holidays. This is why it has TERRIBLE sound. I've done as much as I can to restore it. Unfortunately, on the "recording" that I restored, a lot of the voices are pretty buried behind "tape hiss and noise." Even on that original recording, the consonants of most of the speakers sound almost swallowed. No matter the efforts one makes, you can't restore sounds that aren't there. So hopefully the "swallowed consonants" aren't a problem. Otherwise, I think you can make out all the dialog, better than on the original version.

Unfortunately, this story leans heavily on the "henpecked husband" trope, something that shows up in a lot of old fiction, and in a lot of radio horror. I find it to be a lazy trope, and I don't particularly like stories about unhappy husbands. But there's not that many "Price of Fear" episodes, so I had to dig up a few that are lesser heard...

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm

A lot of the previous episodes of "Price of Fear" that I've aired have had Vincent as a much more "active" participant in the story. This one, he's merely the narrator, which I think he excels at.

I'm not sure I've seen very many obscure ones. I really love, "Laura," which he's in. (A sort of "noir" moive.") And I love him in "House on Haunted Hill."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

You can hear the thick "hiss and noise" creeping into the story, as this part rolls out.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Austin Rich:

As has been the case with a number of shows I've restored this way, when I tried to eliminate all of the background noise, it would kill the sound in a very bad way, and everything sounded worse. So I kept a fair amount in the mix, just to make sure the rest of the sound wasn't completely sanded off.

I have a very high tolerance for noise and poor sound quality, and I don't mind myself. But I do like to try and clean things up as much as I can, so I can enjoy them at a slighter better quality.

The 1927 American version (made into the 1931 film) compressed it, removing characters like Mina Murray-Harker (Winona Ryder played her in the Coppola film, and Eva Green played her in the Showtime series "Penny Dreadful").

I'm trying to imagine, listening to this on Friday nights, in the 40's, as a kid. This must have been HORRIFYING.

This one doesn't sound too bad, but still... it's not great. I did as much clean-up as I could, to get it a little better. Hopefully you can still enjoy it.

I remember watching old Doctor Who, it was 1978 and it was about an alien plant monster thing. My mum was in the shower and I remember running up the hallway tot he bathroom, absolutely TERRIFIED......by the BBC props of stuck on greenery on a shopping trolley (or whatever wizardry they used in their very lo fi effects back then). So what I mean is that its about setting the scene and writing....

Absolutely. Raiders of the Lost Ark scared me as a kid, with the faces melting at the end. Now it looks pretty silly, but I tell you: I had nightmares of people's heads melting for YEARS.

$200 in 1947 would have $2,823.28 in buying power in 2024.

For context: I'm married to my partner, and I don't think I could ever get her to loan me $2,800, no matter what I promised her.

I just looked up who played Betty Boop in that 1933 "Hollywood on Parade" short with Bela.
It wasn't Helen Kane, the singer the character was based on. It was Bonnie Poe, one of the character's several voice actresses (though Mae Questel was the most prolific). She certainly looked the part!

I should look at that. I didn't recognize the clip from the Biography Documentary. But I'm sure there are plenty of things I haven't seen.

For the record, in my head "The Last Man On Earth" was a TZ episode, mea culpa...
