Hey Joe--before I forget, I've got an idea for you. Y'know how you said you always wanted to do a playlist of all the songs name-checked in Amy Rigby's "Dancing With Joey Ramone"? Well...Amy's going to be with you next week. Seems like that would be as good of a time as any to do it. :)

In case you are new to today's theme/concept: Singles Going Nowhere (Part 5)

The perfect primer for Singles Going Steady week next week: 3 more hours of canceled or withdrawn singles. Lawsuits, record company meddling, artist tantrums and other assorted controversies have left a trail of "what ifs" throughout rock & roll history. We'll hear the best (or is it worst?) of them. Guaranteed no repeats from the first 4 installments!

Better Ronson than Ralphs. Worst guitarist to hit the big time. I had the misfortune to hear Hopple twice in Providence opening for ELP then Mahavishnu . First time 3 of their amps went , so they just walked off stage. Second time a drunk Kinks fan took issue w their Kinks cover and hit Ralphs w a thrown bottle . They came off as thinking they were hot shit. They were half right.

No. Rod Serling executive produced, head wrote and hosted "The Twilight Zone". He sued the Marketts for using the 4-note riff from his show's theme.
Rod had nothing to do with the rival TV show "The Outer Limits", but didn't like the publicity given it by that Marketts track. The lawsuit resulted in the single's name change from "Outer Limits" to "Out of Limits".

This page purporting to be from the Boston Globe article in 1980 reported:

Cristina is a punk rock chanteuse whose pseudo-decadent rendition of the Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller song "Is That All There Is?" so offended its authors that they sought, and were granted, an injunction against further sales of the 12-inch single.

...

"I find it disappointing and a pity that they did what they did," she said in slightly affected Anglo-American."It wasn't a parody; I was quite serious. In fact, when I was asked to punk out the song itself, I said I wouldn't, it was too good for that. The lyrics per se I thought could legitimately be made a springboard for an expression of a 1980s sensibility. I made up the lyrics as I went along to demonstrate what I meant. I was exploring narrative, a conversational approach that might last have been heard in the clubs of Montparnasse, you know, Paris in the late 1950s."

Re: Beatles — helter skelter
Yes, That was actually supposed to be the A side, but after the popularity of that Manson TV biography, Capitol figured it would be bad form to be promoting that track around that time.

There was a dedicated mono mix of the track from 1968, but in 1976, Capitol just used a fold down of the original stereo mix.
