This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

i just thought lazarova's point of view was intrinsically traditionalist and that's why it got through censors and was a hit in czechoslovakia. it's social pov pales for me compared to the films of czech new wave, but hey it was a representation of medieval life so how could it not be traditionalist. i could understand how the cinematography would be read as innovative with all the focused deep space scenes, but i ended up thinking george lucas saw the film in film school and used depth of field in star wars. i only know star wars from clips but it ended up reminding me of it. for some reason i did not trust the movie. don't have problems with andre rublev

respect - i too prefer many other Czech New Wave films to it, and think they have a more unique or vital voice in a lot of ways. but i'd no sooner blame it for its influence on star wars than i would do Hidden Fortress or something

never would do brother. i think it really is a uniquely difficult core to intuit, which is why i liked it - it feels like it's as hard to understand as the mind of a medieval person, a quality of incomprehensibility that i seem to seek (& is why i've been watching medieval-set films)

of course he may have done it earlier & not released it, but it's on an '87 production of his for the Ebony Sisters, so it's no earlier than that
