yesterday i learned that max richter (who does big budget hollywood sndrks these days) was part of the Future Sound of London for two albums in the 90s, and produced a few Roni Size records.

my mother grew up in lower east side and absorbed some yiddish...there was a popular teenager living across the street from us, won of his friends was named tommy smota. my mother refered to him as tomm schmatta (rag) and got such a kick out of her own joke but nobody else really got it

well, it's just the alphabet they use. west/central/southern slavic languages use the latin alphabet, eastern slavic (belorussian/russian/ukranian) use cyrillic. also, southern slavic languages like serbian/bulgarian/macedonian also use cyrillic. the only difference b/tn croatian and serbian is the former uses a latin alphabet, and latter uses cyrillic (but don't tell them that).
