A year ago there were articles about cities like Dayton Ohio and Louisville Kentucky (and probably same thing happening in Springfield) where the cities were doing outreach to encourage immigrants, ease them into the community. A needed influx of people wanting and able to work. Set them up to be a target. Sad.

Depends on your purpose. If you just want to be able to reasonably pronounce, you should be able to do both. if you want to be conversational or read text, for either, it is a commitment. The choice would then be the one which are you likely to be have the most reinforcement. As a youth, I was thinking of learning German because so many early translations of Asian text, traditions, were done to German first. Also want to see if I could make better progress with Hegel and Heidegger in the original language. Never happened. but anyway, for success, I think you need to consider what conditions you would be able to draw on to help you immerse.

I think it would be fun to read German literature…but that does require you to get to a level of mastery that would be tougher than French, where I do think there would be more opportunities to speak the language here in NY. Alternatively, I should probably just learn Spanish.

only two fluently. french and german and japanese can be passable. but i can id most languages just by lisening, and i know the vocab of many languages. reading a language (in a latin alphabet/or transliteration thereof) is easy, listening, takes a lot of effort, speaking is very hard for me....

True. And it lasted a while. I think you could hear Mass in french in Worcester up until the '80s. (I have some Acadian in me somewhere.)

not to say your wrong, but it seems to me good translations of german writing is easy, common because of the similarities of english & german.
for me, personally, it'd be more useful to be able to read spanish and russian - where i think a lot of meaning is lost with poor translations

Being able to use a language regularly is the only way to become at all fluent. I took Yiddish closed agrees ago, but aside from learning how the alphabetn works, never was able to converse, because people to converse with are few.

I could be wrong but I just imagine German as this language where a lot of meaning gets lost in translation. They’ve got all these words that don’t have a direct English counterpart…but may be that’s overstated.

At one point I could read Spanish passibly with some dictionary help. Never got beyond very very basic conversational. It would take some effort to get back to that. And my orientation due to marriage changed to Japanese. After 35 years still very much a beginner with Japanese. Haven't made the needed commitment of one or more hours a day, 6 days a week of study plus regular consumption of movies/tv/music for the extended time it takes to really make progress. My family members lost patience with me years ago.

you are incorrect. it wasn't an argument, it was criticism of a doctor using childish and misleading terminology to a patient.
i understand the analogy. and i understand that such a statement relieves the patient of any sense of responsibility to what their body is doing. this i consider immoral, if not ill-informed.

For pronunciation of artists & titles, you can plug the text into an internet tool. It is about 80-90% spot on. Jan Turkenberg on the Sheena stream speaks Dutch, English, basic French (he lived in France a few years) and a smattering of German. He fakes his way with Spanish but with other languages he uses the internet tool. Sometimes he plays the internet tool over the air. Most times he uses it to prep himself before he back announces.
