A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I just saw unwound again, along with Steel Pole Bathtub, and Clickitat Ikatowi. It was incredible; unwound is still VERY good, over 30 year later.

It was amazing to see Clickitat Ikatowi. Since the bands that came after have lost band members, it's the closest I'll ever come to seeing Drive Like Jehu or Hot Snakes ever again. Totally amazing show.

I have new respect for Steel Pole Bathtub, after seeing them live. Those guys are epic noise rock, and I only knew them from compilations. Now I'm obsessively piecing together their back-catalog. Their HEAVY use of samples and weird basslines has sold me completely.

↳ Song: "A Ghostly Story" by "Daniel Johnston"
I got to see Daniel a few times back in the day, mostly on his second wave of fame. (Never saw him in the 90's.) His shows were always uneven, and sort of weird, because you could tell he was sort of having a hard time with crowds and people he didn't know. I'm glad I got to see him play, but it was definitely a weird kind of show. I'm not sure he was ever together enough to tour and play live regularly, but I do have a fondness for his records.

I've mentioned this before, but the AI songs are not that easy to make, if you want them to sound good, or say anything specific. suno.com allows you to put in your own lyrics if you don't like the ones it generates for your, and you can get fairly specific when you try to tell it what kind of music you want it to make. It's not "AI Music" precisely.

These kinds of services are mostly geared toward going viral, or being a hit with younger audiences, so trying to get them to replicate "vintage" song styles isn't really their first idea. You have to keep saying stuff like, #vintage #1930s #OldTimey, etc.

I’m surprised we didn’t hear R. Dean Taylor’s “There's A Ghost In My House”. The Fall covered that.
Last week you had song blocks for zombies, Frankenstein monsters and vampires.
This week has been about witches, ghosts and werewolves.
How many songs about mummies are there? I can only think of Bob McFadden & Dor’s “I’m a Mummy”. The Fall covered that too!

Girls On Fire / Leslie Singer has been making experimental sound art since the early 80's. Some of her recordings are more intense and wild that anything Merzbow was doing in those days. She's still making music, and each release is wild and excellent. I recommend her work.

I saw a one-man enactment of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” yesterday. I spoke with the actor about how Tim Burton’s 1999 movie virtually threw out the Irving book and just did an homage to Hammer Horror. Somebody recently bought that English studio in the hopes of reviving it. If he wants to use the late Peter Cushing, “Rogue One” shows that it’s possible!

↳ Song: "The Great Pumpkin Waltz" by "Vince Guaraldi"
For 20 years now, I have played a version of this song at least once, near the end of one of my Halloween shows, every year. It doesn't feel like October until I hear this song.

Seems like there were at least a dozen of those Peanuts holiday specials. But only the first few were really memorable, if you ask me.

Agreed. I like that Halloween one, and that Christmas one is mostly okay. But the others have diminishing returns, for sure.

The one between the Xmas and Halloween specials, "Charlie Brown's All Stars!", hasn't been shown since 1971.
