I was sort of hoping she would be the beginning of a new batch, but there hasn't really been anyone to try and do that. Pop music is sort of in a different place, where women in hip hop seems to have rose in prominence. I suspect torch singers will come back, someday.

Pop music HAS sort of fractured, in a weird way, where genres that used to command a lot of attention have sort of atrophied, and now, every kind of music has a small but dedicated fanbase. So there might be some pop singers doing torch song type songs, but they might be regional, or have a very small fanbase so they don't get heard outside their scene.

I give a lot of credit to Mark Ronson for Amy Winehouse's success.

It is tragic that someone like Aretha Franklin wouldn't make it because of her looks these days.

I do have to mention Sharon Jones, though, she was a prison guard at a federal penitentiary, and made it late in life. Quite impressive. Loved seeing her live, and with guest appearance by Syl Johnson!

The Boswell Sisters – Shout, Sister, Shout! – Shout, Sister, Shout! - 1931 – Living Era

Jack Starr – Halloween Party – Born Petrified – 1988 – Norton Records – Comment: Recorded between 1958-1968 in a bathroom, partially for homemade horror movies.

Coco Rosie – Lyla - La Maison De Mon Rêve – 2004 – Touch And Go

Marian Montgomery – Why Can’t You Behave? - That Lady From Natchez – 1997 – Audiophile – Comment: Born in Mississippi in 1934, Montgomery moved to England in 1965 and sang in clubs until her death. This is from her last proper studio album.
Avatar 5:12pm
Arvo Zylo:

Coco Rosie are another odd success story. Estranged Native American sisters reconvened to record an album in their bathroom, on answering machine messages, with children's toys and a piano, and got signed to a considerably large independent label based on an extremely rough demo.

Seeing the Butthole Surfers as a young lad really broke my head open in a good way. I'd never seen anything that was so completely intense and confrontational as their stage show. I've seen crazier since then, but for a young lad... they were wild!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
Austin Rich:

"Don't Fuck Around With Love" is a classic tune! Hell yeah.
Avatar 5:27pm
Mr Fab:

must have seen the BH Surfers (as the LA Times used to call them) at least 5 times..? A multi-media mind-blower like nothing else.

Their albums were also great, but really, in a very different kind of way. like Negativland in how they approach the stage and the studio from two different directions, instead of just trotting out the songs the way they sound on the albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm

Mr. Blue from 1932 had a few too many.

The Blenders – Don't Fuck Around With Love – Eat to The Beat, The Dirtiest of Them Dirty Blues – 1973 – Bear Family

I sadly never got to see them. Their reunion show was on a day I had to work, and also conflicted with a Faust show! I've heard stories, and listened to a few live recordings. I recall a montage of exploding heads for part of the video backdrop too...

it's one reason why I wanted to start an on-line station, instead of being on the air - it seemed like not many were really taking advantage of internet radio as a new medium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
Austin Rich:

For a long time, I was bone-headedly attracted to the old-idea of radio, since I was that kid that had his mind blown by turning the dial. But I realize that the kids who are having that experience are having it online, and toiling in terrestrial radio was never gonna reach the kids of today, the way old radio reached me.

Besides: Sheena's has better style than most of the terrestrial stations I've been at.

BO$$ - I Don't Give A Fuck – Born Gangstaz – 1993 – Columbia –

Comment: “In 1994, [Lichelle] Laws [AKA BO$$] was interviewed by a reporter from The Wall Street Journal, who revealed that she grew up in a middle-class neighborhood (on the West Side, Detroit), studied ballet and piano, and attended Catholic private school (where she was a cheerleader), before majoring in business for two years at Oakland University.[3][2][7][8] Laws had never attempted to disguise the truth of her upbringing; the intro of her 1993 album Born Gangstaz, "Intro: A Call From Mom", has her mother Lillie describe her as "a young lady who was brought up through Catholic school for 12 years; and dance schools, tap dance, jazz, piano lessons and all of that; plus, you went to college for three years...."[9] "The album is, in fact, bracketed with a mockery of her rearing; phone messages from mama and papa particularizing a privileged suburban upbringing (Catholic-school, piano-playing, tap-dancing)" belying the record's "unyielding vulgarity and embroidered aggression" with a "brilliant... self-mocking disclaimer". Def Jef, who produced the album and suggested the inclusion of Laws's parents, observed "I can't believe none of the reviews saw the irony of that. No one did!"

We ran into that problem at KPSU. When I started on staff, there were LARGE gaps in the schedule, and I was astonished. When I took over as Programming Director, I kept trying to fill the schedule, but it was an uphill battle. I never quite got a full house, so to speak.

I left WLUW in 2014, and they had a high turnover rate, but WZRD went on strike and battled the university, got a union, and probably still has staff issues, but they at least survived some sort of corporate takeover, whereas with WLUW, the university took over and fired everybody in 2009, just so that they can broadcast basketball games or something. I'm not sure what it was about, but it was not as fun after that.
