I've been reading the tributes to the late Dan Morgenstern. One common note between them is his generosity as a listener. I think he never lost his sense of wonder at this music, which he didn't play, or play with, but in which he played nearly all his long life. I'd like to hold onto that example.

I agree, Kim. I deal with it in multiple ways. One is to immerse myself in our cultural legacy. Recently, I've taken big time to Melville, and I can't strongly enough encourage others to follow. His prose is luminous, crusty, ravishing. Goddammit, every paragraph is a poem.

Then I turn on occasion to the records of the constitutional conventions, which reveal how craven and stoopid were our forefathers. It's like they were channeling George Carlin. Knee-slappers, I tell ya.
