A good example of early pop music ripping off classical is the tune in Dancing cheek to cheek which is straight out of a Mahler symphony, his fourth if Iā€™m not mistaken.

After the Russian Revolution, Rachmaninoff and his family left Russia permanently, settling in New York in 1918. Following this, he spent most of his time touring as a pianist through the US and Europe, from 1932 onwards spending his summers at his villa in Switzerland. During this time, Rachmaninoff's primary occupation was performing, and his compositional output decreased significantly, completing just six works after leaving Russia.

How many starved to death in the Soviet Union?
The result of Stalin's campaign was a catastrophe. In spring 1933 death rates in Ukraine spiked. Between 1931 and 1934 at least 5 million people perished of hunger all across the U.S.S.R. Among them, according to a study conducted by a team of Ukrainian demographers, were at least 3.9 million Ukrainians.

The Soviet Union experienced three major famines:

1921ā€“1922
The Russian famine of 1921ā€“1922 was one of the worst disasters in human history.

1932ā€“1933
The Holodomor, or Ukrainian famine of 1932ā€“1933, was a catastrophe that resulted in at least 5 million people dying of hunger.

1946ā€“1947
The Soviet famine of 1946ā€“1947 was partially caused by the devastation of World War II, a drought in 1946, and the Soviet government's inability to implement effective policies.

The famines were all partially aggravated by the government policies of the Lenin and Stalin governments, such as grain requisitioning, red trains, and forced economic collectivization.

Don't forget "Cannibal Island", in Siberia, where Stalin deported thousands of prisoners to cultivate this island. They were each given a bag of flour, and were told to "git 'er done". They couldn't, and resorted to cannibalism. Anyone who tried to escape was shot.
