Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from September 10, 2024 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Nice to see you early! Tonight we'll play five unidentified punk songs, recorded off of the radio in the 1980's. To this date, they have remained unidentified. Maybe listeners can help?

Arvo Zylo:

I purged a number of things before a number of moves, but thought I'd backed up everything. Anyway, there was this one CD of someone recording songs from sheet music that he'd found from the 1800s. There was a great suicide song written by a guy who wrote it before he stuck his head in an oven. His wife had left him because he dedicated too much time to music... the song was something like "I'm Staying In and Playing A Tune"...

I think of it weekly for years now, no recollection of the title of the CD or the artist, but I think "Music Library" was in the title.

So sad. Hope I find it.

There were about 5 years where I didn't own a TV, and I found one in a pawn shop for cheap when they switched to digital. From 10pm on, I watched Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Tales from The Darkside, Perry Mason, George and Gracie, Outer Limits, and Mr. Ed. It was a perfect evening. I don't know why anyone would ever change it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm

On the subject of t-shirts: my mom has taken to making quilts, as a lot of 70-something year old people do. But she's making them out of t-shirts. I'm gonna take a huge batch of my fave shirts that are ripped or don't fit, and have them made into a quilt!
Avatar 9:25pm
Arvo Zylo:

I always thought shoegaze was supposed to have a lot of effects. Other than Windy & Carl, I do not know why most of what is called shoegaze is still called shoegaze... like... they are staring at their shoes because of all the pedals, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm

Avatar 9:27pm
Mr. X:

↳ Arvo Zylo @9:25
I always thought it was called shoegaze because they are too shy to dance and prance, so they just stand there looking down. Maybe that's where they have the setlist taped to the stage floor.
Avatar 9:28pm
Arvo Zylo:

↳ Austin Rich @9:26
I guess I have a greater demand for reverb. MBV isn't enough reverb for me really. Not that I don't respect MBV, but I am in the market for more effects... there are subgenres now, "dronegaze" and such. I think there's room for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Arvo Zylo @9:28
Agreed. I really like pedals, and how weird the sounds can get now. And I do like lots of reverb, in general.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Arvo Zylo @9:30
That's really good! The few picture discs that I have, I don't think the artists have actually taken advantage of the picture disc aspect of things. (One does that comes to mind... by Men's Recovery Project.) But most are not well conceived.
Avatar 9:32pm

While I mostly bought the punk releases as a kid, these days I find the jazz / improv albums that SST released to be more interesting. A lot of the punk stuff has become "classics," but this stuff has a certain timelessness, where certain punk releases are sort of mired in the years they came out.

I certainly appreciate what they do more than some of the "jam" bands I saw living in Eugene and Portland. When I ran sound for KPSU in PDX, for "Live Friday," I would get tapped for some very boring hippy jam bands that sort of sucked the fun out of improv music. It took me a while to find my people.

I saw BOTM at New Brunswick's Court Tavern in the Nineties. All I remember from it was a performance of the Rocky & Bullwinkle theme.
