A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I was never afraid of the Devil, but I was not raised in a religious house, either, so our family never talked about the Devil. Or God. Or much of anything with any religious angle to it. I often have to remind myself that songs about the devil sort of hit different outside of heathen upbringings. Here's the final "dumb" connection to "American Scary" that might amuse some listeners: I found out about the film because they used some music by MX-80 in the soundtrack, and I read about that on a website about MX-80. So I thought I'd check out the documentary, since I liked horror hosts AND MX-80.

I've gotten a couple of Halloween DJ gigs, the first in 2004. But it's not an easy gig to do, depending on the venue. I did one gig at a bar on Halloween and it was not a great gig, and then took forever to get home after since traffic was garbage that night. So it can be good / can be headachey.

This is the 80's that I am nostalgic for. As I get older, I find the typical 80's "pap" you hear at bars and dance clubs to be fairly boring anymore. It's just... always the same 20 songs...

Recent fill-ins are more recent discoveries, but I've kept the sets for you after having gone quite a while without DJing on the radio, so it has been a long time of boiling and writing crazy scrawling notes in old, withered notebooks and things. I haven't done weekly radio since 2014, but I still have the habit of making mental notes of things to do when the opportunity comes.

I used to bartend and serve at weddings. I know that 80s playlist all too well. I was asked to DJ a wedding, and I was peeved when I was expected to do too much that resembled those playlists. I like a lot of '80s music. I'm more about the overall sound than the melodies, but it's also quirkiness that interests me. I have listened to plenty of old New Wave and Synth Pop, but there is definitely still a desire to hear more of the obscure/outsider stuff that is beyond our introductory "outsider" artists.

I'm sorry. I've lost some friends to drugs, suicide, and other things. Grief is a natural process and time doesn't ever fully heal it, but it does change us in ways that allow for more empathy, which is a tool that needs to be utilized properly for survival, more than any other "coping mechanism", as far as I'm concerned.
