Mornin', BOB! Thanks for playing the BRENTON WOOD record. Had many opportunities to talk with him when I worked at a record shop in San Pedro, California. He had been raised there, but had made Compton his home many years earlier. I must say that I have met few people as kind and polite as Mr. Wood. A joy to talk to, for sure. We sold quite a few of his records as his reputation about town passed through generations of fans. In fact, we had a copy of his "Greatest Hits" LP up on our "display wall," Brenton is in his 80s now. and, I hope, still in good health. OOGUM BOOGUM FOREVER!

Nobody ever played chromatic like him or since. So I guess I'm saying that if he hadn't gone on to revolutionize, um, everything else, there might be a lot of soul-jazz chromatic payers around.

After I taught myself blues harp back in the early 70s, having heard Little Walter somehow (CHESS Heavy Heads anth. ?), my Mom gave me a chromatic harp for Christmas, which I found cumbersome and mystifying. Can’t really bend the reeds, so you have to play…well, chromatically. Chromatic is not so easy to catch onto.
