Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
🌵 Frank In Queens:

Well, grunge was a breath of fresh air of sorts. But all these "breaths of fresh air" moments to be are perhaps a tad overstated. I love punk rock, but my show is a testament to what punk was against so... 🤷

The important thing to me (and what I've learned at my old age) is that music only plays a small part in subcultures that supposedly revolve around music. It doesn't really...
Avatar 7:37pm
KickOutTheJams Joe:

↳ 🌵 Frank In Queens @7:34
It was definitely a major sea change for mainstream rock and the slew of Seattle bands and others changed the game but it wasn't an overnight thing like it's now told in the history books

Right. People forget that Soundgarden and opened up for GNR in 1991, and that AIC were on Headbanger's Ball when Facelift came out. It wasn't quite as if a switch was flipped.
Avatar 7:41pm
KickOutTheJams Joe:

↳ 🌵 Frank In Queens @7:39
yup those two bands crossed over into both metal/hard rock and grunge/alt rock... it was a fascinating time... 120 Minutes & heADBANGERS Ball were so vital to have around.

I'm spacing out the name of the band right now but the lead singer was raised Pentecostal and had two fantastic albums and then supposedly went broke and had to live in his pickup truck???...:)

I feel like it wasn’t a reaction against the hard stuff so much as that before this so much rock on commercial radio was Classic Rock and hair metal a la The Decline of Western Civilization. When radio beyond community and college picked it up is when we got the The Year Punk Broke mythology. For me, when I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit on a local alt station it was like the reign of terror had ended.

I think ultimately it's about kids finding something to call their own. It doesn't necessarily matter what the old guard represents, but the next generation wants to impose their presence in the world, which is completely and utterly understandable.

Well said. The more I watch the Hype! documentary and all the interviews, I can see why the Grunge wave was short in the mainstream. Most of those guys wouldn't sell out to corporate interests and couldn't be controlled. Hence the next wave of Post-Grunge which was basically back to the Decline of Western Civilization (and MTV for good)
