According to Wiktionary, "word", "unit of language":

Hebrew: מילה \ מִלָּה (he) f (milá), דבר (he) m (davár) (Biblical)

So in Biblical texts it is similar to (dvorá) דְּבוֹרָה for "bee". A bit more simple.

Someone did a neat little story about retrieving a person and his newspaper from fifty[?] years in the future and being completely unable to understand what either were saying, largely (I recall) because of shifts in words-meanings and circular references.

It's the same between languages - you're taught foreign languages with the correct terms and grammar, which ends up being excessively formal for most situations among speakers of the language. Think about the types of slang and vernacular (and jargon) in English, and now imagine trying to decipher foreign equivalents of that stuff, even if you know a lot about the formal language!

I have no problem with self-limitation within a form, like 'local NPR'—'being yourself' is over-rated because quite a lot of selves aren't all that interesting or created, but sincere craft is accessible to all. Also, 'sincerity' is over-rated as it's often just another artifice—I think Cockburn's criticism of Orwell on that score is valid. (It's also over-rated because anyone can be sincere, even people with horrible ideas—give me a cynical Tammany ward-heeler over a sincere S.S.-man.)

'Sincerity' as a persona, distinct from 'honesty'?

As Carlin once said: people claim that they value 'honesty' and want everyone to be 'honest' all the time - but if people were actually 'honest' all the time, we would end up killing each other!

Mr White didn't mention that Formby's novelty-songs were beloved for their being as naughty as you could play on the wireless in the 'Thirties, practically 'party records' compared to what you could play over the U.S. airwaves back then.

Formby was also a _big_ hero to put-upon Northerners in a period when male unemployment was (say) 60% in Manchester.

Something like, the 'will' is to direct your future, but really all you have is what you are acting right now? And thus 'becoming' what that is in each moment?

My problem with 'honesty' is that a multitude of things are true all the time, but the people who make a big deal of 'just being honest' always seem to be concentrating on the things that will be unpleasant to hear and/or will score points for them.

Now that I look at it, that stories more about what the Germans call ‹Idiotismus› than anything else, it's being completely concerned with the details of your own life and not caring about any kind of greater context.

What _is_ hilarious in hindsight is the way the author seems to assume that subyrban lufe would be exactly as it was in 2064 as it was in 1964, with men wearing $22 hats' being told to stay out of the kitchen.
