I mainly stick to hardware. And that I have too much of. Ha!

Lately I have been using my Digitakt II as my main scratch pad. I feed that into REAPER (wonderful DAW), and work it into something. If I don't want to use REAPER, I'll play with my RC-505 looper.

I sample all sorts of things into the Digitakt: synths, other samplers, guitars, drums, odds and ends around the house, voice samples from all over the Internet, field recordings, etc.

My dude -- I love the digitakt (I have the OG). That + hydrasynth + eurorack is how I spend most of my time. Your setup's awesome!

I NEED an rc-505, especially after seeing Julianna Barwick use one so well this weekend

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm

Hello everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
zachary:

↳ Dan 2 @4:18
I am not familiar with Julianna Barwick by name. I'll have to see if anyone has played her on WFMU. What did you enjoy about her use? I'll have to check her out by my quick read of her Wikipedia page.

And yes, the Digitakt is amazing. I have never owned a piece of Elektron gear before and, while people complain about the workflow, I enjoy it. I think most of it makes a lot of sense.

I have a Hydrasynth desktop edition that I really like. Which one did you get? I haven't had a lot of time to play around with in-depth sound design, but I am quite impressed with all of the options. I am kind of disappointed I didn't get the 49-key version.

I highly recommend the RC-505. I had an RC-50 and retired that one to get the extra tracks. I have experienced a few crash bugs here and there, but I just learned to save often!

I used to stay off the computer when making music, but I wanted to have a bit more control, so I dove into REAPER again after using it on and off since it came out. I am a big fan of Justin Frankel. Unsung hero of the early Internet age.

Hear, hear! That's awesome, Will. REAPER is amazing. I just bought a commercial license to support the cause and because I use it for my audio editing now after using it on and off for years.

I run Linux, so I have been impressed since WINE worked well and now that they have an official Linux version, it's even better.

I'm always open to having a look at new stuff but my studio leans heavy on Ableton purely because that's what a lot of the people who come through it want to use so I give them what they want so to speak. Might have another look at Reaper on downtime though.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
zachary:

↳ Adi From Sheffield @4:29
Understood. Ableton has the ecosystem with Link and specially built plugins. I haven't used it, but I have seen some videos where people do. Looks like a fine piece of software.

I enjoy the REAPER community and scripting aspect that you can use to expand its capabilities. I have only installed scripts, but look forward to diving in and writing some of my own.

And it's lightweight. 12 megs or so for the full Linux download. Similarly small on OSX and Windows. It's uncrippled shareware, like the original Winamp, so you can evaluate without barriers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
zachary:

↳ Will thee SG OCNY @4:32
Are you recording live sets of yourself, other people, both?

I mean, obviously, you love sound. It's in your name. Ha! ;-)
Avatar 4:37pm
Dan 2:

↳ zachary @4:24
Julianna Barwick's setup is basically vocal effects pedal running through her rc505 (with a tiny bit of keyboard and sp-404), so she'll create these beautiful ghostly harmonies and loop them over each other and then sing over that. I've loved her music for a long time and seeing her live was even better than expected. I would listen to her album The Magic Place if you're interested.

I have the hydrasynth explorer -- I would love the deluxe but I needed to save the money and the space. It's so good for creating noise patches, and I use it in my live setup.

I'll have to look into Reaper! I oddly love trying out DAWs.

Awesome. I dig it. Looping and vocals are a lot of fun. I'll check out her The Magic Place as you recommended.

Cool. I wanted the extra displays, but the smaller footprint, which is why I went with the Desktop version. But now, at times, I wish I had the polyphonic aftertouch keys in the 49-key version. The Deluxe would have been too big!

And yes, the Hydrasynth can make all sorts of sounds. For me, it's a lot of fun to record an evolving patch and then splice it up with the Grid machine on the Digitakt II.

That's cool. Cheers to you and your family! For me, I have found it gets less hectic as each of their autonomy and interests have grown. Right now for instance, one has been reading a novel for the past 1.5 hours and the other is playing with LEGOs in their room.

When they are that young, they still require you for a lot of the minute to minute, hour to hour, activity. Most beautiful way to disrupt your life, I say.

Nice find! I'm sure that's a lot of work, but you'll love it. And she will, too. ;-) We are grateful to have a couple of pocket parks nearby.
