Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from August 27, 2024 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Absolutely loving the show tonight! The struggle about blank tapes really resonates with me! One Xmas, maybe 1993, I gave a kind of BF a stack of 4 new tapes I'd made mixes and copies on, so practically gold, right? He was so disappointed. The only downside to Austin's cheap tapes were that they would fall apart pretty fast... I remember I had two very treasured tapes from Austin that became unplayable because I listened to them to death... Luckily, I saved the liner notes and he was able to re-create them years later (digitally) so at least I had the songs again, if not the tape :)

↳ Song: "Myth (In The Sky)" by "Resist"
As a young man, trying to learn how to play bass, I would try to play along with this song. Never got very good at bass, but have fond memories of listening to Resist records with the gang.

Oh we used to scream that one song in the basement at a friend's where her brother actually had a real Green Jelly show flier taped up!

↳ Song: "Carnival" by "Bikini Kill"
When Bikini Kill played at the Skating Rink in Springfield, OR, we all went. The Thrones opened. We basically got to hang out with and meet everyone, because the skating rink wasn't that big. We even gave Bikini Kill a Cathead tape.

Now, it's over $100 to see them.

All I know about them is that they wanted to be called Green Jell-o, until Jell-o threatened to sue them, so they changed it to Jelly, but still pronounced it as Jell-o.

For a while, not too many years ago, the act was just one gent, who would do a stripped down version, by himself, on stage. They played here in the Mid-Valley just before the Pandemic.

↳ Song: "Viva Las Vegas" by "Dead Kennedys"
When I ran Karaoke in PDX, I would regularly put in to sing the original version of this song, but I would sing the DK lyrics.

I think it's from that comp... I probably got this from a Colin Mix tape. But yeah, those Virus records were ESSENTIAL.

↳ Song: "Communication Breakdown" by "The Dickies"
Truth be told, this Dickies album - Stukas Over Disneyland - was one of my TOP 10 albums as a youth. I listened to it until I broke the tape, bought a new tape, and wore that one out. I now have the LP, but damn... I listened to The Dickies every day, for many years...

↳ Song: "Maggot Brain" by "Mike Watt"
When this first solo album came out by Mike Watt, it totally blew my mind. I listened to it a lot, saw him a few times when he came to the Mid-Valley. It was part of my punk education, to have this guy who I loved introducing me to other kinds of music that wasn't really punk. It's funny to think how often he's been an influence on me.

Mr. Watt is going on tour in the Fall, in a Free-Improv/Punk band, with one of the gents from Saccharine Trust. It should be a fun show, and he's playing near enough to me that I could see him a couple times. I might strap on a mask for this next tour.
