Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from August 13, 2024 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

When I was a VERY wee lad, I saw a magic routine on TV that was set to this song, and I was instantly hooked. But it took me years to find out what band this was, as my parents were not that much into Art of Noise. I've sort of gone a little obsessed since then...

I DJ'd a thing at the Long Beach Aquarium where I was doing visuals and playing with a bunch of other music nerds. The Apple Watch had just come out and so of course I had to DJ with the watch controlling my iPhone then using AirPlay to the Mixer. There was a street busker in San Francisco called the Human Jukebox - can't remember if it was the 70s or 80s. It was like some guy in a carboard refrigerator box. You'd put a quarter in and make a request, and he would open a flap to make a window to appear in, and he'd try to riff on the tune - with varying degrees of accuracy.

Ages ago, I had a friend who made me a tape that had this song on it, but he would mix it with another song, called, "I Think I've Gone Insane." This sequence with Larry and his father might be my favorite part of the movie.

Larry is no snitch. Larry keeps his mouth shut.

I gotta run and do some exterior house stuff before the sun goes down... thanks again for the great show!

Hard to choose. I tend to giggle throughout the entire movie.

I was once selected as an Arbitron diary survey respondent, and filled out their survey for a week, and they paid me a few bucks. I only listened to public radio stations at the time, so I felt like I was throwing a bit of a monkey wrench into their machine.

We got a few more. Hopefully no one minds that we're going long!

Those ratings are an honest reflection of your habits, so don't worry! I'm glad you got paid for it. Keeping track of your listening is work.

Thanks for listening, Heather. It's not real dance music, but it's the kind I like.

I only knew what Arbitron was because the professor of my History of Rock and Roll class went on about it at length.

I would be pretty thrilled if I happened upon a set like this! But we don't have anyone doing anything like you do in town. So I'm thrilled to have had a chance to hear it tonight!

Ha! That makes sense. I knew from working at radio stations. You could get your Arbitron Ratings if you wanted, and some stations did. Others didn't care.
