I think is just in the past 20 years or so in which the narrative of the festival has switched in the main from being overly informed by the movie to a deeper analysis of the history. For example, CC was the "big" band for this festival, secured early, and the highest paid... They sort of fell out of the "history" for a while because they weren't in the movie or on the high-selling soundtrack album.

I think Fogerty knew the band didn't need any real "outside" promo -- that is, he knew he didn't have to "give anything away." He was at the top of his game. The 'legend" of Woodstock didn't really start until after the movie was released.

@tim. To put the record straight, there was no safe place in Vietnam during the war. I was not trained as a combat soldier, but as an interpreter/translator of Vietnamese. Danger and risk were everywhere. Just glad to have made it home safely. Over 58,000 weren't so fortunate.
