Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Although Holiday had limited popular appeal during her lifetime, her impact on other singers was profound. In 1958 Frank Sinatra cited Holiday as “the greatest single musical influence on me” and “the most important influence on American popular singing in the last twenty years.”
Oxford African American Studies Center

"Billie Holiday is the singer who influenced more aspiring singers, both male and female, than any other vocalist in history. Even Frank Sinatra attributes listening to Billie as the major influence in developing his legendary phrasing."

Hey Bronwyn, here's an idea I have for a future AJH program theme: "You Can't Keep a Good Show Down - Music From Musicals That Have Enjoyed Revivals." It would give you a chance to talk about the history of each musical.

I'll credit this idea to a recent radio story I heard about a radical redo of "Cats" called "The Jellicle Ball." It's currently at PAC-NYC through Sep. 8th. Here's a link: pacnyc.org...

Dean:

Whew. Good to know Rich will be up and running and broadcasting as usual. Therefore, I won't hear the show. Because if he hadn't gotten things in order, the radio would have remained broken and I *would* have been able to tune in. But he didn't.
