Mr Fab:

hey Arvo! At a work meeting now, but the show shall roll on.

↳ Song: "Under" by "Loraxx"
I will be playing some things that I found in record stores around Chicago, I used to buy anything that had Steve Albini's name on it, and some of it hasn't been played during the wave of tributes that people did for Steve Albini. I know that Albini did not necessarily like every band that he recorded, but the similar strain in recording techniques was a good premise for a freeform set. There will also be more recent releases recorded by Albini.

↳ Song: "Hot For Teacher" by "Shorty"
Featuring Al Johnson and Mark Shippy, later of U.S. Maple.
Avatar 3:18pm
Arvo Zylo:

↳ Song: "The Delivery Man" by "Bodychoke"
Bodychoke was an experimental noise rock side-project of Power Electronics band Sutcliffe Jügend active between 1993 and 1999.

↳ Song: "Terminal Hz" by "Zeni Geva"
First heard of Zeni Geva in the 90s, bought their CD through mail order from Alternative Tentacles.
Avatar 3:46pm
Arvo Zylo:

↳ Song: "Upbeat" by "Rapeman"
I bought this LP at Pitchfork fest some time before 2013, before they booked R. Kelly as a headliner just to be jerks, in the same neighborhood where he was committing his acts.

It was actually the only time I went to Pitchfork Fest, because my friend had a table selling vinyl, and he brought me in as a helper. I mainly wanted to see Liars and Os Mutantes, don't remember what else happened.

Bought a lot of records that day. Sweep The Leg Johnny was one of them...

Steve Albini did tape manipulation on this track. Vocals by Ogre of Skinny Puppy.

pretty sure this is the first time NiN has been played in the 5-year history of the Sheena's. But hey, to quote the old joke, everything should be experienced at least once except for folk dancing and incest.

I saw different versions of Ruins a bunch of times, the most fun were as part of Japanese New Music Festival (three musicians doing all solo/duo/trio combinations in short sets, it's a lot of fun). Once there was a great AMT set where they were miming playing, not making a sound before unleashing a wall of noise
Avatar 4:10pm

There won't be Jesus Lizard, Low, Nirvana, or Veruca Salt today. Nothing against them, but they were too obvious of choices.

That's excellent. One of my favorite improv sets like that was The Ex with Hamid Drake, wish there was a recording of that.

i know some members of a band from LA called Slug that had some of their albums "reduced" by Albini. Did you come across them, Arvo?
Avatar 4:12pm

I won't be playing The Ex either, but I'm remembering now that they opened for Shellac and Fugazi, a show that was $6, around 1999.

The Ex, stellar good people. I know folks who opened for them a few times, and they insisted everyone be paid the same, which was the most those friends made at a gig at the time, by far
Avatar 4:20pm
Arvo Zylo:

↳ fred @4:19
That is incredible!
Avatar 4:22pm
Arvo Zylo:

↳ Song: "I Wonder Why" by "ONO"
This reissue of a cassette from the early 80s was restored in some way by Steve Albini, prior to mastering. The band recorded a more recent LP at Electrical Audio, Albini's recording studio, but not with Albini, as he was travelling at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm

↳ Mr Fab @4:14
Kawabata was amazing selling the mime set. Acid Mothers Temple can be a lot of fun. At a show he smashed a guitar and threw the pieces in the crowd during the encore. Then did it again. Then again (I was on the side and saw he had a fourth cheap guitar at the ready, I guess the show didn't go well enough to deserve that)
Avatar 4:27pm
Mr Fab:

Albini was certainly known for his outspokenness. Did he ever say what he really thought about Nirvana? Or Plant & Page?
Avatar 4:28pm
Arvo Zylo:

↳ fred @4:27
I've seen Acid Mothers Temple a few times, but no smashing of guitars! Actually, WZRD, the station I've spent much time at, flew them out for an anniversary show. I'm pretty sure I saw Dazzling Killmen open for Acid Mothers Temple, incidentally.
Avatar 4:30pm

I think he said he liked Nirvana. I still haven't heard his thing with Plant & Page. It hits different when I know Page kept an underage girl captive in his home for a long period of time... Not to say I can't listen to Led Zeppelin, but it's not at the top of my list.

I remember a show with a trio of Kawabata, Keiji Haino and Jean-François Pauvros. It was nice, but the best part to me was a pic a friend got between Kawabata and Haino (she was translating). The contrast between the colorful, smiling one and the stone-faced, dressed all black with a cane guy couldn't be better (I'll let you guess which is which)

I've always had a healthy respect for this band, but yeah, it's always interesting to think about whether deliberate "borrowing" was done, or if it was just incidental, especially within a rock context.

Another friend did her PhD thesis on the noise/DIY scene in Paris. The defense was funny, with half scholars half freaks audience.
One highlight was the scholarly discussion of Whitehouse's A Cunt Like You.
