Hey Dave and crew!

mic_a:

Hello Dave and Proglies! Chasing down a loose thread at the end of last week's chat tapestry, I did a little homework on Canterbury keyboard choices.

Mike Ratledge played a Lowrey organ on classic-era Soft Machine.

It seems that Dave Stewart and Richard Sinclair were partial to Hammonds (haha -- partial -- a little organ voicing joke there for ya - uuurgh). Perhaps a reminder that Hammonds offered plenty of softer and simpler voices along with the trademark unkachunka chonkers.

On "Rock Bottom", Robert Wyatt used a Riviera organ. Not a Vox Riviera (they were huge!). Riviera was the brand name of a cheap little 3-octave fellow made in Italy.

https://musicaficionado.blog/2019/07/26/rock-bottom-by-robert-wyatt/

Does Mike Oldfield qualify as a Canterbury guy? He worked with a lot of them. On the liners of "Tubular Bells" I see that he employed Farfisa, Hammond and Lowrey.

↳ Song: "Isis and Nephthys" by "Nik Turner's Sphynx"
Nik's 'solo' career has remained within the space-psych genre. His first post-Hawkwind project was a collaboration with Gong stalwarts Steve Hillage and Tim Blake [amongst others] under the pseudonym NIK TURNER'S SPHINX which in 1978 released a single album - 'Xitintoday' - of atmospheric psychedelia based on flute recordings from inside Egypt's Great Pyramid. He would revisit this style in 1993 with a re-worked version called 'Sphinx', while also returning to his Hawkwind roots with 1994's 'Prophets Of Time' and the live set 'Space Ritual 1994' that would provide the impetus for the establishment of the Space Ritual band.- Prog Archives
