Weird thing about this band - they would change their name to Rufus, hire Chaka Khan as singer, and go full-on funk. But mostly the same musicians. Crazy.

I can only imagine what it was like being a band in the 60s and trying to adapt to the 70s, seems like Funk is not a bad choice!

↳ Song: "(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows" by "Billy Idol"
I kinda always wanted to play something by Billy Idol on the radio, but never did because it's commercial. I love the story about how Billy Idol stole the master tapes to this album from producers because they wanted to use cover art that he didn't like. He gave the master tapes to his heroin dealer to make bootlegs of if they didn't agree to use different cover art.

heroin dealers, record company execs...not sure who I would think would be the most trustworthy to deal with...

Wow, time flies, I was thinking it was very recent that Arvo and Austin did a Thursday afternoon but it was back in March. Then you've fill-ined for Roy S for the last two weeks. Are you going to stake out a time slot of your own?

I might be too much of a loose cannon for that, but I do enjoy it! I've been a regular guest on Mid-Valley Mutations, too. It's really nice to have time to just let an idea for a freeform set gestate and take shape slowly.

Roy is on summer holiday for a whole month, and Arvo has graciously volunteered to tackle all 4 weeks.

I always admired people like Larry Grogan who can go on about all the details behind a song or band. I had Larry do a remote guest set on my radio show before he was on WFMU, around 15 years ago now!

Most of my knowledge of Reich comes from contemporary dance. There's a show that has Piano Phase, Come Out, Violin Phase and Clapping Music (seen it 6 times). My record is at 7, scored to Music for 18 Musicians

Some of my early experiences with experimental music (before I knew about noise music) was when I was 19 and dating a woman who did dance performance. We saw people dance to experimental drummers and whatnot, she introduced me to butoh, stuff like that. I never did see Steve Reich, though.

Good to know! I have to admit I'm not terribly familiar. I do remote fill-ins for WZRD-Chicago too, and they require some sort of "non-entertainment" as part of their programming, which includes poetry, so that prompted me to look up surrealist poetry, and I got into a bit of a wormhole.

I've not been a big poetry person historically, but I do miss when coffee shops were more creative spaces, and not dominated by laptops.
