Brian in UK, Theodorakis was exiled in Vrakade on the island of Ikaria, where I stayed for two weeks in 2016. Ikaria is where Greek stashed all it's communists and subversives after WWII. Ikaria is remote and dusty. They thought it would be a hardscrabble hellscape. It turns out Ikaria is one of the world's six "Blue Zones" where people live long, unusually healthy lives.

The kora is such a JAM instrument. Ripe for extended improvisation. The players are often performing long long long story/songs, telling of whole histories and lineages of families and villages and kingdoms. They need to fill that time with endless sounds and keep things fresh and changing and exciting.

The griots were the keepers of the history of the people. There are special families who produce the storytellers who sing of these human histories going back hundreds of years, back to the ancient kingdoms. And the these specific families have been producing the storytellers for all that time. The Diabaté family is one such family of griots.
