Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from July 30, 2024 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

MORE MIX TAPES
Avatar 9:09pm
Mr. X:

I've been kind of obsessed with simulating the nature of mixtapes myself, lately. I've been limiting my digital playlists to 45 minutes, focused on a theme, a scene, or an era.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr. X @9:09
That's smart! This week and last week have featured 90 minute cassettes, each week. There's something about that length that seems very perfect for the right kind of mix.

↳ Song: "Horse Heaven Hills" by "Mecca Normal"
I just got some Jean Smith books in the mail today. This is my favorite Mecca Normal song. Oh LauraPanic, I pulled out that 2 Foot Flame record since last week, and rocked out while working last week
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Song: "Dream of Sleeping Sheep" by "Eleventh Dream Day"
As I get older, I love this band more and more. But I think that's also because I have more and more of their albums to listen to, now.
Avatar 9:13pm
Mr. X:

↳ Austin Rich @9:10
My brain is hardwired to that length of time, due to so many jam sessions that ended abruptly when the tape ran out. I learned to anticipate it, to keep from getting cut off.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr. X @9:13
There is something about tapes that started to infect the way people made art, and not always in the best ways. (The 45 Minute Limit being one.) But there are such breathtaking examples of cassette art that I keep finding, that makes me think cassettes will continute to be discovered for years and years to come.

While there is a larger "cow punk" theme to this whole tape, we are dead in the middle of the cow punk set. As a "country mouse" who came to the city, I was sort of pre-disposed to like country music a bit, and was even an Uncle Tupelo fan in High School. So this kind of punk was PERFECT for me.

↳ Song: "Ft. Lewis" by "Richmond Fontaine"
I never gave Richmond Fontaine a fair chance, in spite of having seen them live. I was immediately convinced that they were an Uncle Tupelo rip-off, and sort of looked down on them. Now I really love them, but I was a jerk about them at first.

I like to imagine you go on a trip somewhere with a couple of mix tapes, and some kind of Vonnegut-Galapagos situation happens, and that is the only music left. How would that change your experience? ↳ Song: "Portland, Oregon" by "Loretta Lynn & Jack White"
so this mixtape contains a fatal flaw (as all mixtapes do). There is a song by Dolly Parton called "Eugene Oregon" that was supposed to go after this, but I only had it on an mp3. Although - in retrospect, I could've just put a line out from my computer to the tapedeck? Live n learn!

What are other mix-tape oddities you got from friends? I made a tape, once, of all the stuff that I usually put between songs on other tapes. I recall that one did not get a very good reaction, back then. (I have a copy of that one still, and it is a bit hard to listen to, agreed.)

i remember a ramones tape, rocket to russia, which i recorded while friends were over, partying. i had mic/line mixing on my cassette deck, so i faded up the mics between some songs, before & after each side, and kept them on through we're a happy family!
then i happened to put something entirely different on the other side, Billie Holiday of something. that actually *didn't* work so well!

I have to admit: the idea of watching three movies in one day sounds exhausting. I used to do it a lot, and I even minored in film. But I usually have about one movie in me, and then I need to think about it for a while. I think college sort of ruined all art for me, because I need to Lit Crit everything afterward, to figure out what I "think" about it.
