This would have been the "New Year's" Broadcast for 1946. In my memory, there was nothing in the story that related to new years's, or even the beginning of the year. But In this era, a lot of shows were not really worried about being timely, and often only did so for big holidays.

Rogue is also very pushy, with almost everyone, too. (Particularly with women he is hitting on.) I suspect that is part of the "hard boiled" style that people were trying to ape in those days, and in particular, part of Dick Powell's efforts to repair his "good boy / crooner" reputation. His behavior in this show, in spite of his good acting, makes him come off as a charismatic "dick," in every sense of the word.

You can hear a "crackle" that matches the sound of the mechanical motor spinning the disc. This is a common sound on a lot of Rocky Jordan episodes. Eventually, you learn to listen "through" them, but I did my best with new digital tools to remove as many as possible, without ruining the sound.

Chris, the bartender at The Cafe Tambourine, is one of the unsung heroes of this show. He is often asked to do something for Rocky, or takes are of the bar for Rocky, runs an errand, breaks up a fight, etc. Chris is sort of the secret backbone of this show, and I've been thinking about writing a story from his point of view.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

While the setting is in Cairo, quite often the stories would work in any large city, almost anywhere in the world. The problem is that all the actors a very obviously Americans, so the accents sort of stick out, and it probably would have been better set in the US somewhere.

That said, the exotic setting, and the excellent music, have made this a unique noir among old radio shows.

Religious radio, and church radio, was HUGE in the US, and in many ways, led to the laws we have, since many churches tried to monopolize radio licenses. The most dramatic version of this is seen in the TV show Carnivale, which has a creepy religious pastor who broadcasts his sermons as part of the story.

Blue Beetle always separated their stories into two parts, but at this point in the run, "Mutual-Don Lee" was encouraging that the two parts air on different days. At the beginning of the Blue Beetle run, they suggested that both parts should air on the same day, and for the first couple episodes, the two parts are hard to find the separation point. This is one of those shows that got better as it ran, but since other similar shows were much more popular, didn't run much longer after they figured out the formula. It's surprising that the show lasted as long as it did; there was brutal competition in the kids adventure market.
