i believe oriental has fallen out of favor for a number of reasons... one of them being edward said's book 'orientalism' which to put it simply describes the west's stereotyping of the east, another being with globalization the term is just plain old

Hey, I knew I schlepped the OED to the office for something! Apparently, punk meaning prostitute dates to the 16th century. But, there's a seemingly unrelated American usage of punk meaning rotten or useless that dates to the early 18th century, and which may be related to funk. Johnny Rotten really hit all the notes.

just as many people have somehow used their brains for the first time and realised that "native american" is just as asinine as "indian", i think "african american" is asinine.
...unless we're going to refer to "white" people as "european-american"; or "northern european american"...
separate from "european south american", of course... and i've heard many asian people refer to themselves and various aspects of their culture as "oriental".

...using english words to describe people who's first language is not english is going to do that, with or without any racism attached.

...maybe an asian person, in his or her ancestry's first language as a completely different word for "asia"...

ya know, that brings up a question i've never had answered... because i used to say just as you say (or basically) "i'm united statesian"; or i'm of the u.s. (not "i'm american")
...BUT - was the combination of the 2 continents named america first, or was "the united states of america" named first... because if it's the latter, which i think it is, then "south america" actually means "south of america"
(because the world revolves around the united states of america)

No I think Italian mapmaker called it all the Americas. After Columbus presented it to him - having in fact ventured in the Caribbean (the Columbus method of pioneering not unlike my typing : Find a Key & land on it...)
I say 'U.S. American' - cause - it's the USA. Seems accurate (in context) - & not too awkward or overlong...

No but etymology is often illuminating. To examine what a Word is really saying... But then like any Symbol it morphs. Like forgetting what your Algebra was standing in for in the first place... For example the Norse 'Wyrd' meaning Fateful becoming 'weird' ...not the same, but you can see it from there...
