The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

That's not good news, Wendy. That is WONDERFUL news! Welcome to the club, or whatever it is. I just returned from a retirement party for one of my bosses, a former library director. She was able to meet a few of the new, younger (than me, which isn't hard) library staff who so delight me, because they have new ideas, they're enthusiastic, smart, creative, and ambitious. She made it clear to them that working in a library is simply the best.

The answer to "why not" is that capital wants to decimate labor costs even at the expense of reducing service. How do they pull off this shit? Well, one way is by inviting consumers to manage their own affairs, in the same way that we lost defined benefit retirement plans to defined contribution. *You* get to choose how you want to invest your savings. *You* don't have to rely on paternalistic financial planners whose motives might conflict with yours. How has that turned out? Miserably.

exactly, cost management over service. and I fear that too much focus on libraries being facility that should have higher utilization will lead to more momentum of putting knowledge management more in the hands of the tech bros. and the end of libraries as physical places with books and knowledge skilled people to assist and advocate getting art and ideas and needed information to people.

Just the "new and recommended table" at the library has introduced me to much that I've treasured and enjoyed. Way better curated than the algorithm recommendations from Amazon that are either extremely obvious so unnecessary or ludicrously off base.

I kinda disagree, tttps. The mission of most local libraries is precisely to serve the needs and demands of their local constituencies. This makes sense to me. We're not there to change them.
