Pausing my online shopping to connect to the stream. Elegance? Charming.

Which way to Layaway?
Avatar 1:07pm
Mr Fab:

The shelves are empty, the store went out of business years ago. You just walk - or waltz? - down the aisles.

Feel free to get down on the floor and lay away wherever you like

Stating specifically that I will not go down a rabbit hole of finding out more about that 3M cartridge format. I won't. I can't, need to pay bills, review medical charges pending, decide if I am going to the concert tonight or watch it online. I... I... Maybe I should lay over here.

24 hours on one cartridge - that's a helluva mixtape.

some of the largest cartridges ever !

I never really understood layaway. I worked at Kmart and they had a layaway dept. Why not just wait until you had the $$ - then buy?
Avatar 1:15pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Herb @1:12
So you can have it NOW!

That gerbil from the pet dept, those Hush Puppy shoes, that shiny polyester shirt can be yours TODAY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
David The Splatter:

↳ Herb @1:12
It's like, "buy now, pay later", except you don't get it until you've paid for it all. If you wait until you have all the money, that couch or that washer/dryer might be sold out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
David The Splatter:

↳ Mr Fab @1:15
Considering they don't let you have the pet gerbil until it's paid off, I don't want to know what condition he's in after a few months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Herb:

↳ David The Splatter @1:15
So basically you're leaving a deposit. But everything there was in mass stock except for maybe a rare occasion or you wanted a shirt they had in XXXXL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
David The Splatter:

↳ Herb @1:18
Yeah. Some families (like mine) couldn't afford the whole thing in one go.

I wonder how long they'd hold stuff. In mine I don't think it was even a option. I heard a lot of "NO" as a kid.
Avatar 1:21pm
Mr Fab:

Ah, I thought the point was you could get it right away.

But OK, when next season's fashions come in, you can still get that shirt with the giant wingspan collar that had been removed. It will be waiting for you.

The only thing the Cantata tapes are missing are the in-between ads talking about Martha Stewart's product line.
Avatar 1:22pm

Speaking of Martha Stewart, my brother works in film and TV and has done work with her - she is very unpleasant to work with.

I could see where it would come in handy with items in demand.

That's what happens when you're friends with Snoop Dogg - she's keepin it gangsta.
Avatar 1:24pm

Someone as chill and laid back as Snoop palling around with Martha Stewart is so funny to me. She was very grumpy and not personable at all.

6 months, I think, but this was in the 80s. I worked a brief stint at Kmart in '98 and layaway was nothing as I remember it.
Avatar 1:25pm
Miss Mei:

She got annoyed at my brother for adjusting her microphone, which is literally part of his job.

It must vary by store, then. I can only go by hazy memory.
Avatar 1:29pm
Miss Mei:

Fun fact, K-Mart is alive and well in Australia. But it's technically a different company. They still use one of K-Mart's early logos (pre 1990s if I recall)

The Kmart near where I live was parceled after it closed. Part of it is a trampoline park and the other half is an Ollie's Discount.

It's a like a whole, "Where Are They Now?", but for old Kmarts.
Avatar 1:52pm
Mr Fab:

the low-fi sound makes it all the more dreamy. Elegance, indeed! I float down the aisle, gracefully spinning as I hold aloft my newly-discovered treasure: the exact kind of fabric softener I need in my suburban paradise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
WR:

Several youtube vid playing some of the cartridges. Found this 8 minute one that focuses on how the 3M Contata works.

It can be any store, right? Not just Kmart, but Woolworth's or Ames or Montgomery Ward?

low-fi, yes, surely the 1-7/8 IPS combined with really how often did someone clean the playback tape head made for floating and wowing (or as you put it, dreamy) sounds.

Aaah, I remember using Woolworths brand crayons when I was a small child. Woolworths went out of business when I was about 3 years old though.

WR:

↳ Miss Mei @2:20
There are related in name only Woolworth chains in Australia and South Africa.

In Europe, a German subsidiary that spun off in 1998, after US stores closing in 1997, still active.
Avatar 2:40pm
Mr Fab:

Woolworths closed that long ago?! Dang, I remember buying crates I wanted to use to keep records in. Cheap plastic that broke easily. But I recall they had a lunch counter.

I discovered last year that a Bloomingdales that I had never been to even tho I've lived near it for 12 years has a nice little restaurant. And plenty of customers. Bringing classy back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm

Now I'm trying to look up old department store chains that might still be alive in Europe or somewhere outside the States.

I remember they closed up the Harvest House restaurants at the end of the 80s (again, I think), but the last Woolworth I went to was at a mall around 1996, 97, maybe.

Herb:

There was also Woolco which may have been a regional Woolworths.
