Maybe shipwrecked sailors have returned, reincarnated as the rooks that have chosen upon the old stone church in Embleton, whose name itself gives off a particular hum. Is it that the rooks are only rooks, and they sound dark to us because the Black Bird has so many associations with malevolence and ill-omen? Lethbridge might have said that the birds come here, largely due to this always pagan site having obvious associations with the strong atmosphere of its ley lime and ritual past. Today, cars file past on their way to a family picnic on the promontory. Go there at dawn, or last thing at night, out of traffic hours, and another sound takes over. The acoustic of the place spins the parliament of the rooks through the cold air, its stillness, and into the timeless chaos, as always, driven on by the ringing of the bells."  0:34:20 (MP3 | Pop-up)

bob brainen related that fact about recording drums last week.... when he played baby dodds in a group from the'20's and you could hardly hear him. i had commented that the era was close to ragtime so other instruments like banjo were handling the rhythm, which he said may have been true also for sidelining drum recording

Not on most of the research side. I know some of the sound people from outside so I once tried to bridge the gap and encourage conversation. It was a disaster. Lowlight: a researcher telling a sound engineer "anyway, the kind of mic and its placement has absolutely no effect on the sound". That was the end of that conversation

for sure, i think you would be right here. i sincerely hope any association of an artist like Dodds with terms like "common folk" never comes off as a putdown - i suppose i try to employ that term as a positive when praising artists who managed to accomplish incredible things without necessarily benefiting from the special privileges of wealth, whiteness, etc., etc.

but Dodds was absolutely a genius. maybe his relevance to this program, if i am not totally misguided, might be his contribution to New Orleans regional/folk culture?

i deeply appreciate your comments & hope i'm making at least a little sense here!
