Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Yeah, cheer up. Most days I feel about as positive as this guy.

BTW, I'm coming in a little late this evening. I missed your opening spiel, Bronwyn. Trying to figure out what "Hi-Fi Stereo People" means from the music played. I'm enjoying these old songs, in any case.

I remember Rose Marie as one of the writing colleagues of Rob Petry on the Dick Van Dyke show. The story of this recording is interesting (from WikiP): Her first issued record, recorded on March 10, 1932, featured accompaniment by Fletcher Henderson's orchestra, one of the leading African American jazz orchestras of the day. Henderson and the band were said to be in the RCA Victor studios recording the four songs they were intending to produce that day and were asked to accompany Baby Rose Marie, reading from a stock arrangement.

I was wondering whether it was the same Rose Marie I remembered from that TV show.

I think that magazine was similar to the magazine The Smart Set or Vanity Fair. The 1910s and 20s was something of a golden age for witty literary and cultural reviews

I first heard this song done by jazz singer Mark Murphy, who I have to say put a lot more emotion into the performance than Ms. Booker did. www.discogs.com...
