Merrily We Roll Along is a mish-mash of high energy lunacy, reverence, and irreverence for forgotten pop stars, love for Saturday morning cartoons, and exploration of the side of Bandcamp where I seem to be the only one purchasing. Bringing to you the odd and the upbeat from a growing collection of pre-rock novelties, classic and neo-Vaudeville, jug bands, polka, klezmer, and more at the convenient hour of 8-9 AM EST, Merrily We Roll Along starts the day off with a little light-hearted musical tomfoolery cut with an occasional comedy sketch. It's organic, free-range, cheese with the occasional onion thrown in.

I was listening to an “1890s” playlist earlier, none of the songs were from the 1890s Ironically

hi folks

Hi Bri. It doesn't surprise me actually, make it sufficiently old and people don't notice.

That’s true, it was mostly late 1910’s-early 20s, but most kids can’t tell the difference
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am
MHLee:

↳ Bri The Beatnik @8:02
I think Ian Whitcomb has a "titanic music" album that has quite a few early 20s song on it

I'll send you an archive.org link to some comps organized by year.
Avatar 8:05am
Bri The Beatnik:

I pay attention to years, once I was watching I movie set in 1964, but in the background they were playing a song that didn’t come out til ‘67

↳ WR @8:05
Ooh! Thank you!

Hello MHLee and listeners. The only hats I have are WFMU ones (mostly baseball caps, one bucket hat)
Avatar 8:06am
Bri The Beatnik:

↳ fred @8:05
Love it! Can’t get enough bucket hats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am
MHLee:

I have a wfmu one now, but i have quite a few hats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am
WR:

↳ Song: "Where Did You Get That Hat?" by "Uncle Ant"
that sounded very similar to a Kevin Ayers song.
Avatar 8:07am
Bri The Beatnik:

I spent about $50 Once on a bucket hat, it shrank, it wasn’t worth it :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am
MHLee:

↳ Song: "In Your Green Hat" by "Art Gillham, The Whisperin...
The "Whispering" marketing for this voice was interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08am
MHLee:

↳ WR @8:06
I can see it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am
WR:

↳ MHLee @8:08
the Ayers tune was probably derived from the same or a similar music hall song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am
MHLee:

↳ WR @8:13
which ayers tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am
WR:

↳ Song: "Bowler Hat" by "Tricity Vogue's All Girl Swing Band"
tap dancing on the radio is my new favorite instrument.
Avatar 8:21am
Bri The Beatnik:

Hat was my first word, apparently I pronounced it with a British accent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21am

↳ MHLee @8:16
I think it is called "What about me" will look it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22am

↳ Song: "Bowler Hat" by "Tricity Vogue's All Girl Swing Band"
I saw a guy at a show last week that had a bowler hat, old-timey formal suit, and an impressive mustache. All that was missing was a cane (it was an experimental music show, adding to the dissonance)

↳ Song: "A Straw Hat and A Cane" by "Johnny Desmond"
surprised to see sheet music for this. By this date I would have thought only major hits or show tunes having sheet music published.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am
MHLee:

Relatable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am
MHLee:

↳ WR @8:30
The sheet music also seems to be from before the hit. Thought it was odd too

Musicman1918 has uploaded lots to archive.org. change the filter on the link I sent from "whitburn" to highlights and you see another series.

Much of it was uploaded to archive org by others but Musicman1918 grouped the tunes in thematic comps.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43am

that is a series of videos with historical photos and art behind the music. There is narration but from what I've watched the songs are played in full without talk over. Also for the highlights series he has music only comps uploaded.
