Thinking of like Winton Marsalis quoting Louis Armstrong that they were actually more integrated in the 1920s. History not always how we think of it. Of course Glam was Androgynous ...altho some of us were tender & young in the 1970s ourselves...

He has mentioned in the past about "having a mild Asperger's" (which is a now-outdated term for being on a specific point on the autism spectrum). That's probably as close to as a confirmation as we'll get but, yes, I think his work is about as autistic-coded as possible (him and Gary Numan really). It helps explain why I've always identified with him.

Y'know... I've got an online magazine I'm working on, with a handful of essays on it, some written by myself, some by some friends of mine who are talented writers. It hasn't launched yet, but I've been meaning to put some music reviews on there.

While I'm doing that, I should copy/paste those reviews onto bands' and people's Bandcamp pages. Promote good music, and promote my online magazine while I'm at it.

Throwing this onto my "to do" list, thanks for the inspiration, Julie!

I like to do that - regardless of your current location/environment, you can imagine places that WFMU tracks take you to! "A journey in place" as I've often said.

@hunterfelt: I've never done shrooms, but some of those have made people feel "trapped" in ways - it's possible that might trigger the unescapable trip of super-mundanity...

Certain substances trigger vivid closed-eye hallucination that are basically waking dreams and it's not uncommon for them to take place at work. Uh, so I've heard.

I worked at a crazy little copy store right off the campus of UNT in Denton TX in 1997? 1998? There was an all-in-one stereo behind the counter and a stack of CDs, one of which was Surfer Rosa — and another one was "They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons" by the Swirlies. Used to get stoned on the walk to work and just listen to music and make copies and ring people up and it was an okay job, $4.25 an hour wasn't too bad back then.

I’m no expert, but to me PJ is always just her own thing, not really comparable to anyone except for Patti Smith, without whom there would be no PJ. I think that PJ is as likely to put out something really edgy now as at any point.

Her earlier stuff was definitely the most overtly punky. "Dry" will always be my favorite album of hers, but her later catalog is definitely varied in terms of tone. Her last album, "I Inside the Old Year Dying" definitely has a lot of sharp edges to it, definitely my favorite of hers since "Let England Shake."

Speaking of hallucinations - a featured article on Wikipedia today is "Mad honey"! I remember a National Geographic describing the Himalayan hallucinogenic honey, how it was gathered and the poisoning effects of it. Didn't realize that's known as "mad honey", or that the Turkish/Caucasian variety has been used as a weapon of war, to intoxicate opposing armies!

i feel like "mellow" is the wrong word, but i don't know the right word. it's almost like she just got a little quieter, and she picks her loud and/or edgy moments very carefully. Stories From the City was the first record by her I heard and is still a fave, but so is To Bring You My Love and both can get loud and dark. her subject matter has never mellowed

Scott W (at least, years ago when he was doing audio experiments) would probably take the bird's wings flapping against a mic, then record it, slow it down, add reverb, phasing and other effects to make a freaky sound.

Sorry, I meant as a hypothetical (though if we point Scott to that wing-flapping sound...) Might be hard to search but they're in his Archives somewhere.

The Fairlight (CMI) was a transition between older analogue-generated sounds and newer MIDI digital tones, so usually I can pinpoint Fairlights in the '80s, as distinguished from the analogue synths.
