My daughter (who moved back in with us) has a mini-pooch (about 15 lbs). In January we got a recue puppy (see my avatar), who's tripled her weight since we got her (she was 9 lbs in Jan), and I think may still double her current weight (the vet predicted 40 lbs, but I think 50 or more is likely)

My take (most likely medical issue): the enlarged adenoids most likely pressed against and blocked the eustachian tubes. That's the connection between the middle ear and the throat (why you can swallow and "pop" your ears when they are affected by pressure, as in a plane). When that tube is blocked, the middle ear fills with fluid, which doesn't allow free movement of the ear drum (tympanic membrane), and this causes a loss of hearing. My $0.02...
