“Straight Time” (1978) is a stunner of a film ! Those who haven’t seen it yet are in for a serious treat ! Hoffman like yall have never seen him … and don’t forget how excellent Gary Busey was prior to his 1988 motorcycle accident (no helmet/permanent brain damage). Harry Dean Stanton is really tremendous in Straight Time (as is his usual!). Good ole boy E.E.Walsh is wonderfully utilized - yet another indelible moment! & lastly… Fookin’ Theresa Russell = oh my lord = 🔥😍😵‍💫🤤.

M.E.Walsh in VT anecdote: whilst eating dinner with family at a restaurant nearish to St Albans - and suddenly couldn’t help but overhear this distinctive laconic drawling voice … look over to where it’s booming forth - it’s Mr Walsh in the flesh as head of a large table of abt 10 family folks. He’s definitely in his element holding forth. After, he’s departing the bathroom and nearly mows down my very petite partner in crime. As i heartily shake his hand and thank him for his service in the performing arts - he launches into an anecdote about how “where he comes from, they usually take the runt of the litter, put em in a gunny sack & throw them in the river !” Oh me oh my - I cherish that sideways insult to my beloved and will never forget it … predictably Classic regional eccentricity personified ! 👏🙌🫶

In regards to the question “is there anything better than bbq?”, the answer of course is tacos. The proof: there’s a taco emoji and none for bbq.

@mailmanTom & BruceS (et al): thanks for that culty rarely celebrated Rod Taylor reco of ‘darker than amber’ (1970) - we will definitely be searching for that!
Love the sound of it & the Florida mise en scene.
Btw: anybody ever have a gander at the Aussie oddness that is “Welcome to Woop Woop” ?!
- wiki sayeth: its a 1997 Australian comedy film directed by Stephan Elliott and starring Johnathon Schaech and Rod Taylor. The film was based on the novel The Dead Heart by Douglas Kennedy. "Woop Woop" is an Australian colloquialism referring to an inexact location, usually in rural or remote Australia.
