Scott from Boston:

My wife and I went to the Middle East about two years ago for the first time to get away from the kids first night out in maybe 13 years. Before the show we were standing around and my wife sat down and we were both looking at our phones, nothing was happening yet… Jonathan came out and I almost passed out sure enough he walked right over to me and he began to preach about how I shouldn’t be using my phone and we are addicted to phones and he doesn’t want to see me use the phone during the show. I really didn’t say anything because I was stunned. I thought it was very rude of him, he doesn’t know my life. So I took out my phone during the show and stood upfront so he could see me. I’m still disappointed.

It seemed at the outset that the Pretenders might become a truly canonical band, but they never quite made it to that level. I recall being flabbergasted when a young dude I knew, who knew something about music, had no idea who they were.

It might be on eBay but used flexis that play through are hard to find, and especially that one--it had six or seven (?) separate grooves, and when you set the needle down you didn't know which one you would get. They all start the same but there are six or seven different middle verses about having a really bad day.
It's on YouTube, last time I checked.

I have an Eva-Tone sales kit, sent to me in 1985 by salesman Dan Mikrut, when I was eighteen and doing a fanzine. I didn't eventually spring for the flexi (cassettes were cheaper) but he treated me like a legitimate customer. It's full of flexis.

There's a "museum" of flexi discs linked from or hiding somewhere on the WFMU website.

Scheduling quirks are funny. The Twins apparently don't want to be home the first day of fishing season because nobody will be at the ballpark. Similarly some clubs actually don't especially want to be home on the Fourth.

all I really remember about it is - a modern-day western with Robert Blake as a cop, and great cinematography

drr:

EGIB is a good 70s movie, kinda strange. Robert Blake plays a diminutive, by-the-book motorcycle cop who wants to make detective, but has no feel for dealing with criminals. It was directed by James Guercio, Chicago's manager, and the band members play thugs and greasy hippies.

Pecker is fun, but who knew John Waters would become the most conventional filmmaker of them all?

Tell me about it. I make an exception for Opening Day, but that's it until at least mid-May. Although this year they're retiring Doc Gooden's number on the 14th and I'll probably wind up going for that.
