Going to see Jalen Ngonda on Saturday Kris. Smaller venue this time and sold out so hopefully will be a more positive experience for him performing in NY after his show last fall was maybe a quarter full. Still was an amazing show. Have you picked up his album?

I have not picked it up but i've liked the stuff i've heard, been meaning to delve deeper. Enjoy the show! The scandal recently was a fake Jalen Ngonda facebook account that was friending & messaging people on the soul music scene with scam fake VIP packages & tickets for shows. Many people fell for it & paid money.

When I would stay with my grandmother near Nashville in the 1970's she would watch gospel shows on WSM TV. Maybe that's why I like the songs I've heard tonite; they remind me of those groups.. I wish I could recall the names of some of the groups.

She loved all music.. The first music I ever remember hearing was a 78 she was playing on her Victrola. She never got an electric record player..lol. The music was "Moten Stomp" Bennie Moten. She had lived in Detroit up thru the late 1930's so she had a great collection of jazz 78's.

This is bringing back more memories. The afore mentioned grandmother's husband would take me to church sometimes. They didn't believe in musical instruments in that church so there was some pretty amazing singing. Ray Walker (The Jordanaires bass.. backed up Elvis) led some and would travel to other churches and lead singing. Some of those congregations were pretty amazing; you could definitely "feel the spirit".

Kris.. I don't mind admitting your show tonite has brought a tear to my eye. Several years go I tried to find gospel music like my grandmother listened to, but none of it sounded right.. too modern or something. But the tracks tonite are right on target! I'll be running this archive very frequently. I think maybe you've restored my faith in WFMU; maybe I'll pledge again. I'm VERY grateful to you!
