If we can't get personal with the shows that we're making, I'm not sure why we should do this at all. This is a good reminder of the possibilities. Every show is personal, but some can be even more so, and still be compelling and excellent.

"In Watermelon Sugar" is probably my favorite Brautigan book, but I like bits and pieces of all his books. "A Confederate General From Big Sur" is another one that has some of my favorite Brautigan bits, even if the novel isn't as strong overall.
Avatar 👻 8:29pm
Mr Fab:

Joe Frank is a late radio monologist, very popular in public radio starting on the ‘80s. Irwin here on WFMU used to feature his show every week for a while there. Probably still in the archives.

Yes, one of the most memorable programs you did, Austin, was the one built around your grandmother's [I think your grandmother, not mother] recording. And then the one about your mother's radio career.

There may be a limit to how many of those stories we may each have, but they are very special.

The slowed-down background music is a nice touch. I mentioned the Joe Frank show, he used to use stuff like early Steve Reich tapping away in the background. This is a more original choice.
