Right. As I understand it, it's not simply multiple percussion instruments hitting on different beats at different times.

Well - Paul is Thee Melodic Genius. There's things like his shift of Keys in 'Penny Lane' - as given exposition in this great doc :
www.youtube.com...
Mostly this is because TheBeatles were just instinctually Musical. But yeah - Paul comes closest to being Technically knowledgeable. Which I reckon is both to his credit as a Talent - & perhaps that smallest degree more self-aware. Tho still basically a Rawk or a Folk (in the academic sense of unschooled) Artist.

I'm also kind of fascinated by how the Blues is generally considered this very set & simple Form - there's this number of bars, & that's what defines it. But then so many of the Originators & the Greats didn't conform to those things @ all. They were too busy expressing themselves ! It wasn't Formally Set yet - it was organic... The sort of thing makes me think that Free playing is - in natural fact - actually more Traditional in its way than otherwise ! & a certain %age of Free players actually having notable backgrounds in various Roots Musics (if not all of them)...
